Description

Largest selection of genuine antique weapons for sale in UK. See our website andrewbottomley.com. Ref 9695. A rare early silver mounted Scottish Dirk, circa 1740-1790. The Pommel with a circular silver top. The wooden hilt finely carved overall with Celtic design basket work and inlaid with silver studs. Single edged blade 14 inches in length, engraved with a large crown and showing some signs of wear and use, the back edge of blade with a narrow fuller and retaining some original blueing and gilding within the fuller. This dirk is complete with its original silver mounted leather scabbard now missing the small bi-knife and fork. The silver mounts are slightly mis-shaped, the bottom chape engraved with a thistle. The mouth of the top silver scabbard mount is unusually cut with two grooves to accommodate the fullers on either side of the blade. No visible makers marks. Overall length in scabbard 20 inches. A very rare piece and in good condition. This is the style of dirk that would have been carried at the battle of Culloden in 1746. Ref 9695.
