The intensity of the fighting on the Eastern Front in Russia is well-known to military historians, as is the scale of the campaign and the number of troops involved. The author manages to convey all that in just 123 pages, by using fine text which is supported by a selection of illustrations, maps, and artwork, which will satisfy modellers and war gamers, as well as being a fine general read at the same time. All the key decision-makers are included, and the biographies of the opposing senior commanders offer up some interesting facts. The book covers a period of 20 months, explaining how in September 1943, some 4 million Russian troops advanced along a front stretching 870 miles. The author lists the number of vehicles used, against which the Germans never stood a chance. Nevertheless, as explained in this fine work, the fighting continued into Berlin, leading to the final destruction of Army Group South.
