There are now more red dot sights available than ever before, to suit all pockets and guns, and the quality is generally okay across the range.
The Geco R20 red dot sight reviewed here is, however, a better than average and very reasonably priced choice.
Geco are a well-established manufacturer of high-quality optics which have characteristic weight and robustness. The R20 is a very compact unit, only 67mm long, but surprisingly heavy indicating both quality and strength. The sight comes complete with a Picatinny/ Weaver compatible base, which is detachable for fitting to other systems, and the 30mm body carries non-magnifying optics that are very clear. On the left side of the body there is a large control dial for turning on and setting the red dot. With 11 different intensity settings the 2.0 MOA red dot is adjustable to suit any light conditions with windage and elevation dials also positioned on the body of the unit under protective caps.
As the test gun was an older Ruger 10/22 a replacement rail was needed and a quick phone call to the 10/22 experts at South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies had a Power Custom Picatinny rail delivered a couple of days later. Fitting the red dot is then very quick and easy using the single fastening screw and can easily be done out in the field if necessary. Sighting in took only a few shots as the dot was already centralised and the base sits centrally on the rail.
This is a ‘both eyes open’ sight and it works extremely well, with target acquisition being extremely quick and intuitive. The red dot and the image in the tube is very clear and easy to use, both indoors and outside.
This sight is great fun to use but it does have a downside; you cannot help but rapid-fire rounds down the range, getting through a lot of ammo! For .22 shooting competitions it is the ideal sight, allowing super-fast target acquisition and allowing you to keep on target through rapid fire. For hunting applications, on fast moving targets like wild boar, this sight would also be ideal as it gets you on target in an instant. The oversized dial allows you to very quickly adjust the intensity of the red dot if light conditions change.
This is a top-quality red dot sight, built to last with high-quality components, and well worth the price. It is suitable for a variety of applications, from competition to hunting but proved particularly great fun for plinking. The fast target acquisition does draw you into rapid firing so take plenty of ammo along to the range when using this scope.
