To many non-airsofters the sight of someone running around in a military style helmet must seem a little odd, but in real terms many Military Simulation scenarios often take place in specialist military training areas that are hired specifically for their unique atmosphere and setting.
Undoubtedly the most popular of these training areas are of an urban nature, so overhead hazards can be a real issue. To counter the risk of a head injury players therefore turn to replica, or indeed sometimes real, head protection. It’s not about looking like a commando (not entirely anyway!) but purely a matter of common sense.
To this end there are numerous manufacturers out there that specialise in helmet accessories. Whether it be a working strobe, NVG counterweight pouches or helmet lights; they are all available in either “real deal” or replica format; the replicas often resemble the real item, and in many cases are properly licenced to reflect the work put in by the original developers.
Replica accessories for airsoft – fit for purposeNight Evolution have been around for a while now and make accurate replicas of some of the most sought after rifle and helmet accessories that you’re likely to find. They are sold specifically for the airsoft market and make no claim to be adequate for the real tactical world; that said they are often a fraction of the cost of the real deal, and work well in the environment they are intended to.
The CHARGE MPLS light is essentially a replica of the model from Princeton Tec; to put things in perspective the NE version will set you back iro US$40.00 online whereas the real Princeton Tec is iro of US$100.00 plus shipping, plus import duty!
In terms of performance the NE replica has a maximum output of 40 Lumens for 7 hours as opposed to the 46 hours at 55 Lumens of the real thing; you do indeed get what you pay for. However, most airsoft scenarios, even full on ones, will last for a max of 36 hours, and you’re only going to use the helmet light for a fraction of this, so I would still say that the NE is fit for purpose.
It has four output modes (red, green, white, and IR LEDs) that are easily cycled with one hand. The flexible neck allows for easy beam placement and precise lighting, so whichever way you turn your head, the light will illuminate there. No tools are needed to replace the single AA battery used for power, and such cells are easily obtainable and easy to carry should you need a spare.
The lights comes with two fitting options for OPS-CORE and MICH style helmets, and there is an additional plate included to attach to MOLLE webbing should you wish to.
Would I trust my life to this little replica from Night Evolution? Simply put, no. However, hopefully the average airsoft game is not going to require me to do that, so the replica is going to do me just fine!

I’ve been a huge fan of chest rigs ever since I laid my hands on my first ARKTIS model, and over the years I’ve had a chance to play with versions from many different manufacturers. I was really pleased to receive an OPS Tactical Integrated rig in A-TACS FG from Sheffield based store HUEYS.
UR Optimal Performance System or OPS Tactical was established in 2006. From the very beginning they made their clothing and gear in genuine Crye Multicam and officially licenced camo patterns like Woodland Marpat, Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP), and Desert Marpat. Now, however, they have really embraced the very latest pattern innovations such as AOR2, A-TACS AU, FG & LE and Kryptek Mandrake, Highlander, Typhon and Nomad.
OPS Tactical continuously pursues creativity and quality in their product development, looking for the very best fabrics and methods of construction. To ensure durability and protection for the end user, their products are only made from genuine Mil Spec materials.
They provide first rate, top of the line products and services to their customers which include Military operators deploying in Iraq and Afghanistan, Law Enforcement Organisations, SWAT Teams, security companies and also Film Production companies; a little known fact is that OPS Tactical products have even been used in the motion pictures Terminator Salvation and Batman!
Long Term Test
I’ve been using the Integrated rig over the past six months and I have to say that I am pretty impressed with it. The “integrated” part of the equation is that it comes in one piece with no MOLLE or similar. All the pouches are sewn in place, but they are where they need to be. There are 8 x M4 (P,E and Standards all fitted fine) magazine pouches with adjustable flap, 1 x radio pouch, 2 x pistol mag / taclite pouch, 2 x utility pouch (small 5”(H) x 2.5”(W) x 1.5”(D)), 1 x utility pouch (large 5”(H) x 4.5”(W) x 1.5”(D)), 1 x flash bang pouch, and 1 x mesh pocket (internal 8” x 7”).
It’s an extremely well constructed rig with official A-TACS FG 500D Cordura, MIL-SPEC webbing, and ITW NEXUS buckles throughout. Everything about it screams “quality” and I can’t see the stitching coming apart any time soon. It comes with ergonomically cut, fully adjustable padded shoulder straps, a webbing waist strap, and if you want to attach it to one of the OPS QD Plate Carriers it is fully compatible.
While it’s not the cheapest rig on the market today, neither is it anywhere near the most expensive; at the time of review you can pick these up from US$120.00 / UK£100.00. It’s a workmanlike piece of gear so if you want some “bang for your buck” then it is very seriously worth your consideration. At the same time I also looked at the matching Dump Pouch from the same line; this too worked exactly as it should and I’m very pleased to give both items my thorough recommendation.
