Deben Tracer Max Lamping Kit

Deben Tracer Max Lamping Kit

One of the first gun lamps I began to use regularly was an old Tracer Max 400m. So a quick call to Deben had them kindly send me the latest model with dimmer switch and a set of optional clip on filters, plus a major other surprise. More on that later…

The ‘Standard’ kit includes a Max Pro 12V Lamp, remote, stock-mounted brightness control, snap-on 25mm (1”) scope mount, 12v 7Ah ‘lead-sealed’ battery pack in belt pouch and a mains charger with indicator lights. Setting up is simple; the snap connector clips over the scope’s body tube (preferably behind the saddle) then slide the lamp head into the top of the connector.

Two Pronged Attack

The two-prong, clip-in connector from the lamp is attached so one runs to the ON/OFF dimmer switch and the longer lead to the battery connector. The switch is positioned on the forend, though I now prefer to hold the unit while cradling the rifle forend in my leading hand.

story continues below...

The beam angle can be altered by a drum at the rear of the lamp head to shine exactly to follow the sightline of the scope. Filters are an optional extra available in red, amber and infrared. Only the first two are available in a hinged ‘flip-down’ style.

You might think we’re going over old ground but now to the surprise. You now have the option to purchase the Max Pro 400 with the more compact, far lighter and in my opinion very impressive ‘12V Pro Lithium Polymer 5Ah’ battery pack. Incidentally, the Tracer Mini Pro 250m can also be purchased with this new and improved power source too. A more powerful 12V Professional Lithium Polymer 10Ah Power Pack is also available.

Slip-in Compacts

Granted the new Pro Lithium batteries are more expensive, but you get more hours continuous use, and both are compact and light, and the larger version is ideal for reasonable range foxing too. Incidentally, both the new Lithium cells easily fit into the cargo pocket of a hunting jacket.

The new lightweight (315g) 5Ah lithium polymer battery gives 1hr 15 minutes of continuous burn time, only 15-minutes less than the lead/acid type. As you can see by the photo, the size and weight reduction is startling from the standard. You still get an unfiltered beam on full that can reach out to 400m but dimmed down and filtered you can, in an instant have the lowest torch light.
