Buck Haxby Lock Knife

Buck Haxby Lock Knife

With greater frequency, Buck Knives have been releasing an increasing number of new models of folding lock knife. However, while some are variations or second generation models of an established line, it’s good to see the company are still going forward in a programme of development and innovation. The latest example is the Buck Haxby, which is a big and bold lock-liner with a full length flat grind blade and carbon fibre handle.

Big & bold

Measuring 5” in the closed position and weighing 4.5oz, the knife holds a 3.875”, 7Cr stainless steel blade. It’s interesting and useful in this case to know that 7Cr stainless steel is being used more and more frequently for hardworking knives, as it has great hardness and strength under tempering and quenching conditions, plus also features excellent corrosion and stainless resistance. Already, the Haxby has started to become very appealing in relation to the build quality.

Flipper

A red pivot collar on the handle accentuates the carbon fibre handle plates but of more importance at this point, is that the knife utilises ball bearings for easy opening. The ball bearings lie between the blade and handle liners in a recess underneath the pivot point, so once the flipper on the rear of the blade spine is operated (pushed down and back), the blade effortlessly deploys into the fully open position, where it is then locked into place by a strong liner-lock. The flipper (as it’s known) can clearly be seen protruding from the top/rear section of the blade when it’s in the closed position. Due to the design, when the flipper is deployed it serves as a finger guard. This combined with the choil and ergonomic handle’s contoured design makes it very secure in the hold.

Handle it

Using carbon fibre as a knife handle material has become very popular over recent years, due to its strength and cosmetic appeal. Carbon fibre is tightly woven and made up of thin, tiny strands of carbon that are bound with an epoxy resin, giving it a superior strength-to weight ratio compared to steel. It is also resistant to corrosion, expansion and temperature. Plus, despite being extremely lightweight, it is also very durable. It is one of the hardest artificial substances available for manufacturing high end knife handles.

Conclusion

The Buck Haxby is an impressive, robust and ultra-smooth opening field knife that will take on the toughest of tasks. It also has a removable stainless steel pocket clip and a lanyard hole, plus carries the Buck Forever Warranty.
