One of the best ways to understand a battle or campaign is to break it down into manageable sections and study it piece by piece. This well-researched book does just that by concentrating on the landings of the 50th Northumbrian Division, 8th Armoured Brigade and 7th Armoured Division on ‘Gold Beach’ on D-Day and their subsequent actions as the units fought inland. Step by step, the author expertly guides the reader through every stage of the operation and engagements with the enemy infantry and tanks. The successes and setbacks are covered and the comparison photographs between then and now set the scene. The maps keep the reader orientated and the first-hand accounts accompany the text perfectly to fit everything together. A perfect book to use for a self-guide through the area, and if you get lost it won’t be the fault of the author.
