Orion & Ranger Headlights

There’s no disputing the utility light market is over flowing with choice. So to discover two that offer clever features and good prices is a real bonus – and that’s what you get with the Orion clip-on and Ranger head lights from Deben.

The Orion like the Ranger is manufactured from a tough synthetic. Small as can be seen, it slides on to the brim of a baseball cap, so needs no head band etc. The outer is in Realtree AP camo, which is always a good selling point for we hunters. Though looking good the tangible bonus is its performance.

Measuring a mere 2 x 1 ¾” it slides onto the cap’s peak where it sits securely on top by two, integral prongs. This positioning does not intrude into your line of vision either. Powered by 2 X CR-2032 Lithium Batteries (supplied) housed neatly in the underside casing, the Orion boasts five LED bulbs. The centre one is larger and positioned higher and offers a high power white lights that can be projected out to 15 feet, due to the design of its reflector. Either side of this are two, green, lower power units.

Operation is by a rubberised pressure switch at the top rear of the unit. Pressing once switches on the white LED, a second push turns it and the greens on. One more again brings the white back on for full potential and a final one turns the unit off.

Traditional

The Ranger Headlight is much more traditional with a single adjustable camo pattern elasticated headband and green, waterproof lamp head. This measures 2 ½ X 1 ¾ X 1 ½”, the design obviously allowing you to direct the light exactly where needed. Power is supplied by two X 3AAA batteries (included) these run the ultra bright, 1W, main Luxeon LED, plus one white and two smaller red LED’s. These sit below the main beam with the white in the middle and a red either side. 

A pressure switch on the right of the main lamp operates the modes. These being white high power only, (giving a tight beam with approximately 20-yards range) white low power only, red only and red flashing – the latter three modes catered for by the lower LEDs.

In my opinion these lights give superb value for money and even offer features not seen on other similar units of this type. In fact, I reckon every air rifle hunter who ventures out after hours should have both…
