Deben Group Industries Ltd has long had a good selection of binoculars in their Hawke Sport Optics brand range. However it seems they’ve really upped the ante recently in both the quality and range of scopes and binos they offer. The Frontier® range, like their name suggests, are pretty much at the ‘forefront’, being both cost effective yet giving top performance.
There are four models to choose from in the Hawke Sports Optics Frontier Phase Corrected range of binoculars, those being; 8 X 32, 8 X 42, 10 X 32 and 10 X 42. All models are also available in either black or green. They also come in a very cleverly built semi rigid clamshell opening protective carry case. Once you open the case using the heavy-duty double zip it reveals two compartments. Inside one you’ll find the binos, an adjustable padded neck strap, a detachable neck strap for the case plus a lens cleaning cloth. Once you’ve fitted the straps, the design of the case is such that the integral interior divider can separate and securely hold the binos to one side while the other can be used for carrying the cleaning cloth and equally handy you can store a notebook to make notes of quarry behaviour and location on your shoot.
The stylish and ergonomically designed binoculars are obviously of a tough build, yet feel comfortable in the hold due to the protective non-slip finish. They feature twist up eyepieces and an adjustable dioptre set to the right. Twist up eyecups make viewing much easier while wearing spectacles or sunglasses. The dioptre adjustment is smooth and precise in operation, so therefore makes setting them to your particular eyesight a less time consuming affair. The main focus dial is ideally positioned ‘rear centre’ for adjustment with your forefinger whilst holding the binos up to your face.
They’re rated as what is known as ‘phase corrected’, this prevents any distortion of the object being viewed giving the image a high definition both at medium to long range. Also it helps eliminate the infuriating crossover effect you can get when looking through certain other types of bino. The BAK4 Roof Prism fully multi-coated precision ground lenses provide a crisp, clear and very bright sight image with a high level of light transmission. As you’d expect, they’re nitrogen purged to avoid fogging and sealed to be fully waterproof. They feature a pull off double cover cap at the rear and at the front have ‘stay on’ protective rubber lens covers. Both models tested are identical in size and easily lived up to the manufacturer’s claims. I found their compact dimensions and light weight very beneficial considering the features and performance. Field of view was particularly impressive. For the performance to price ratio, features and comprehensive packaging coupled with the Hawke worldwide warranty these are highly recommended observation aids.
