Lyman BorecamPro Wireless Borescope

Lyman BorecamPro Wireless Borescope

For internal barrel inspection, Lyman’s Borecam Pro is a welcome update over the previous wired camera unit. The new model pairs onto your iOS/ Android smartphone or tablet’s network via Wi-Fi to display, record and transfer imagery. Lyman supply a USB charging cable and an adaptor with UK and European interchangeable pins.

Details

Once charged, a roller dial switch under your thumb can be used to illuminate and control light intensity inside the bore, adjacent to the 45º mirror in front of the camera lens.

At 24”/610mm long, the stainless-steel rod carrying the light, lens and camera, slots into your barrel from either end depending on the required inspection length. From the breech, it gives you a direct view of the abutments, chamber, leade, throat and the lands/grooves of your barrel. At the muzzle end, it allows the detailed inspection of the crown, which is the most critical contact point for consistent accuracy from any rifle.

Going wireless saves trailing connections, gives immediate control and significantly more display clarity as well as transfer ease. Thanks to your current hi-res tablet or phone screen, it now shows 720P resolution images. Everything is transferred without any problematic display latency, making specific locations more intuitive to find on what is a great diagnostic tool of problems, barrel condition, corrosion spots or simply varying cleaning regimes.

The Lyman fits into .20 cal and larger bore sizes and a padded case is supplied for protective storage. A fine-tipped kit with some solution is included to clean the tiny mirror and camera lens.

Once you can see your point of interest on the screen, the secondary control button takes a photograph with a short press or after a longer hold, initiates the video. The footage then is stored in the app and transferred directly to your smart device’s photo library for further transfer via text or email etc. The battery life has been well over 2-hours and there is a rubber collar on the steel extension tube that simply allows you to set it for ‘depth’ when a specific detail is found. I check every review rifle I receive and the wireless Lyman has sped up the process, with less clutter spread on my workbench and less likelihood of snagging a lead and damaging the steel extension tube as well. The image quality has been improved and the setup time is faster, plus rotation is easily controlled around the circumference of the bore, with a larger 44mm diameter handle than the previous model. It is more likely to need to enter from both ends to achieve the same reach, but the extra control dexterity is worth it. It’s also handy for inspecting action raceways, bolt abutments and moderators, so all in all, a great piece of kit, with appropriate, helpful technological evolution.
