Evolve Sound Moderator

Evolve Sound Moderator

Sound moderators have always interested me, as well as subsonic calibres, and over the years I have found that the quietest moderator does not necessarily make the best moderator. In that, I mean certain rifle shooting disciplines require noise reduction at differing levels. For deer stalking, I like a smaller, lightweight moddy that reduces the overall muzzle report but is not a heavy, ungainly lump at the end of the barrel! For long range varminting where the round count will be higher and the shooting position more static, then yes, a heavier mod that does not heat up as quick and offers excellent noise reduction is preferable.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a suppressor that offers a blend between the two? Well, I think the Evolve moderator distributed by Raytrade might just tick all boxes.

Up close and personal

Evolve moderators are made in Scandinavia to a very high specification, specifically for the UK market. However, the price point is great at £199 for all calibres and thread sizes, making life a lot easier.

They are a one size fits all option that are rated for all calibres ranging from .17 Rem up to .300 Win Mag, with six different thread size options: M14x1, M15x1, M18x1 (Metric), ½x20” UNF, ½x28” UNEF and 5/8x24” UNF (Imperial).

The overall dimensions show a total length of 230mm, and the reflex design ensures 100mm sits over the barrel while the remaining 130mm sits forward of the muzzle. The diameter is 48mm, so not too ungainly, and means that there is plenty of volume for noise suppression, with a maximum barrel diameter fitment of 23.7mm. The best bit is that the Evolve is constructed of aircraft-grade aluminium alloy and weighs in at only 380-grams, so it does not unbalance the rifle.

The reflex design, where the baffle stack is in front of the muzzle, is enhanced by the rear expansion chamber position that sits around the barrel, meaning a shorter and better handling rifle all-round.

It’s a sealed unit, but you can see the regular forward arrangement of baffles that capture the brunt of the expanding gases, with the rear portion having the blast baffle /defector and threaded section.

Performance

I have fitted these Evolve moderators to many styles of guns and have always been amazed, not only by their lightweight nature but how well they reduce the decibel levels. A typical .308 Win factory round will produce around 160 Db and the Evolve reduces this by 30 Db to 130 Db. Smaller calibres with less powder capacity can expect even better results.

Conclusions

First of all, £199 is a bargain. The noise reduction is very good, it is lightweight and it gives a very hollow, low resonate signature with no roll or echo. What more do you want?
