Praesida Moderator Covers

Praesida Moderator Covers

A few years back, I was looking for a decent moderator cover to combat the heat haze generated by my Predator 12. After a conversation with Alison at Wildcat Moderators, I got the opportunity to test a couple of moddy covers from Praesidia Rifle Accessories (PRA) and have been using them ever since. However, Praesidia has since made some changes to the design and I wanted to have a look!

It is worth mentioning that PRA now manufactures an even wider range of products and these include ammunition wallets, bolt pouches, cheek risers, scope covers and front/ rear bags. All of them are distributed by Wildcat Moderators and can be ordered from their website.

Options

For a perfect fit, each cover is hand made to fit a specific make of moderator. Wildcat offers a great selection including all the various lengths and sizes for their Panther, Whisper, Evo and Predator models as well as for the ASE SL5, SL7, Jet-Z Compact, CQB, North Star, Stalon W110 and even the Accuracy International moderator. There are various colour options which include Olive Green, Black, Tan, as well as Black or Green MultiCam (on test). I have been told that they will also be introducing Grey soon and that people can request custom colours as well. Nice!

Design and construction

story continues below...

Each cover is essentially a square-shaped piece of Cordura-type material that seals around the moderator via a Velcro strip that goes from one end to the other. To provide a tight fit and prevent movement under recoil, the design incorporates a series of stitched loops along its length at 12 and 6 o’clock. Instead of the elastic paracord which used to be laced through these, PRA has updated the design. Each loop now accommodates a belt system comprising of a 35mm wide band which goes through a plastic loop buckle and is secured with Velcro. This improvement is not only a lot tidier but easier to adjust. Plus the wider bands apply pressure to a larger surface area, making them more efficient than the paracord.

Another improvement is a toggle adjusted rear cuff that helps seal the cover around the rear of the moderator. This is a useful feature for night vision/thermal users as it helps prevent glare. It was originally added for deer stalkers to prevent the cover from getting pulled off by branches/bushes but is now a standard feature as it also stops the cover from sliding forward under recoil.

The final change is the material in contact with the surface of the moderator. It is no longer NOMEX mesh like the original, this is because the manufacture and supply have stopped. Instead, it is now a more heavyweight Kevlar and this has resulted in lower bulk with no reduction in performance.

Conclusion

The job of a moderator cover is a simple one and after extensive use, these ones from PRA certainly hit all the right notes! I appreciate the new modifications and they have certainly improved the final product, but don’t just take my word for it, several polices forces in the UK now use them as well! All-in-all, well worth your consideration.
