Pro Ferrum Gun Care Fluid

There are countless gun care products available for us to use, to keep our precious firearms in good condition. Each one has its own particular purpose, be it copper solvent, lead solvent or general cleaning fluid. Pro Ferrum Gun Care Fluid is something rather different and it describes itself as a ‘complex fluid with wet drying capabilities’. So, what does that mean?

Cleaning

The fluid dissolves metal residues in the barrel and you can actually see the fluid change colour as it lifts it, taking on a grey or greenish colour. It will also tackle rust, turning an orange-like colour when it pulls it out in areas you thought were clean and protected. The colour changes are really useful as an indicator that the fluid is working. Old oil and grease are also washed away, leaving a very clean gun.

Water, what water?

As well as its great cleaning properties, Pro Ferrum also has another trick up its sleeve. If you spray the chemical onto a wet gun, it grabs the water and surrounds it, lifting it from the metal surface. It then takes on a milky, off-white/ cloudy appearance. You can then simply wipe the gun over and there is absolutely no water left. If you are out shooting in the rain and get back to the car with a wet gun, this is a fantastic product to spay all over the gun, wipe it down, and then reapply. When you get home the gun is dry and just needs cleaning, with no worries about rust or water damage.

And finally

After you have cleaned your gun with the product, it leaves a protective coating that spreads out and penetrates all areas, including those that are hard to reach. Sweat and acids from powder residues are neutralised by the fluid and it continues to provide a water repellent coating after it is applied.

Conclusion

Pro Ferrum has the remarkable ability to displace moisture and when it comes into contact with water, you can actually watch it change colour as it works. Testing the fluid on steel wood screws showed just how effective it is, even when left outside. If you are going to store guns for any length of time then a dose of it would certainly give them protection against corrosion. If you are caught out in the rain then a thorough covering will ‘dry out’ your gun and stop rust getting a hold before you get it home. Although not cheap, this is a product well worth carrying with you.
