Wiley X WX Boss Glasses

Wiley X WX Boss Glasses

As well as providing enhanced vision and improved contrast when it comes to your target picture, a decent pair of glasses should also provide protection to your eyes. For shooting sports, the physical safety features of the glasses can be more important than the UV protection, because anything that hits you in the face is likely to be hot and sharp.

The build

The grey/silver flash lenses in the Wiley WX glasses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection and 14% light transmission, which gives a very sharp, clear and glare-free view in even the brightest conditions. The lenses also have an anti-fog coating and a multi-coated Z-Oxide mirror covering to further improve your view.

The simple wraparound temples provide a comfortable and secure grip without feeling too tight. Being low profile, they can be worn under ear defenders without compromising them. The bridge area in contact with your nose is large and contoured for comfort and does not intrude into your field of vision at all.

A very clever and removable foam gasket provides what Wiley X call a ‘Facial Cavity Seal’ to prevent wind, dust and peripheral light from getting to your eyes. The removable gasket works as a seal between your face and the frame of the glasses, surrounding each eye, and this is surprisingly comfortable and effective. If you suffer from hay fever this can help keep pollen away from your eyes and reduce the likelihood of you experiencing itchy eyes in the summer (obviously no protection against pollen entering your nose is provided). The gasket does not interfere with your field of view or affect the comfort of the glasses and it really does work as a barrier to particles that might cause irritation.

Protection

The glasses are certified to a high standard of robustness, including resistance to penetration by highspeed projectiles, which is obviously a worthwhile feature in a pair of shooting glasses. If an ejected case, a ricochet or pieces of broken clay were to hit the glasses, they will provide a high level of protection and help prevent injury. With eye protection compulsory on many shooting ranges, glasses like these make a sensible choice.

The glasses come with both cord and elasticated leashes, a cleaning cloth and a zippered clamshell case that provides relatively good crush protection. All of the accessories are good quality and useful, with the leashes making it much harder to lose the glasses.

Conclusion

Quality eye protection is something every shooter should use and Wiley X makes a huge range of glasses, including many with clear lenses suitable for indoor use. Their outdoor glasses provide very high levels of UV protection without restricting your vision and are very comfortable to wear. The WX Boss glasses do not ‘darken’ your vision to a noticeable level and you can actually forget you are wearing them when you go indoors. After a long day out in bright sunshine, while wearing these glasses, your eyes will not feel tired or strained at all.
