Kupilka Cutlery

Kupilka Cutlery

Eco-friendly Kupilka Cutlery, Bowl and Cup – specially made for outdoor eating, as John Fenna finds out

Just the job for outdoor eating with class, classic looks and “eco cred”, the Kupilka range of cups, bowls, plates and cutlery are based on traditional Finnish designs, but use a modern, but 100% recyclable, bio material.

The name “Kupilka” means “little cup” and also refers to warming your hands on your cup of hot drink in the winter and, as the biomaterial used in the Kupilka range is more able to cope with heat than plastic, this is certainly practical.

The biomaterial is 50% pinewood fibre and 50% thermoplastic and with its random “patterning” the material looks more natural than plain plastic, is more durable and can even be lightly carved or engraved for a custom finish.  Unlike wood, the Kupilka utensils are dishwasher proof, do not need maintenance, do not absorb stains or smells and will not shrink or split if over-dried or swell if left wet.

Completely recyclable, all Kupilka products can be ground up and recast when they come to the end of their useful lives.  Even the packaging is made from recycled card so your Kupilka has great eco-friendly credentials.

The biomaterial was developed by Puugia, the centre for wood technology in Joensuu, Finland, and is used in a range of utensils that reflect traditional Finnish wooden items in style, comprising:

  • Snaps Kuksa Cup – a 5dl shot glass at £7.45.
  • A classic Kuksa cup 2.1 dl cup ideal for tea coffee etc. at £16.95
  • A classic bowl of 5.5dl capacity ideal for soup or other food at £18.95
  • A classic plate of 4.4dl size that sits across your thighs neatly for alfresco dining at £19.95

A cutlery set of knife, fork, spoon and teaspoon that seem tougher than most plastic alternatives and more pleasant to handle than metal “camping” cutlery, at £7.95.

A gift set of all the items in a wooden box is available at £89.95 and a set of cup and bowl at £32.45.

I have been trying out the cup, bowl and cutlery and have viewed the other items in use amongst my friends and have been impressed by the practicality, “eco-cred” and look of the Kupilka utensils.  Ideal for outdoor use, such as shooting picnics with a different style, the Kupilka utensils are as practical as they are attractive and eco-friendly.
