If you intend going out into the wilds, it’s always a good idea to take some emergency supplies with you, because you never can tell when something untowards might occur and you have to stay longer than expected in less than ideal conditions. If things go very badly, being able to cope can sometimes be the difference between life and death. Simply being able to light a fire could save your life or help you signal potential rescuers. It therefore stands to reason that taking some form of emergency kit with you is very wise. The durable, bright orange pouch measures 6 1/2- by 4 1/2-inches and has a reflective strip across the front, so you’re very unlikely to lose it! The zip up pouch contains a selection of items that could really help in an emergency or simply form the basis for a Bushcraft kit.

The lock knife features a black coated, three-inch stainless steel drop point blade that comes extremely sharp and is easy to open with one hand thanks to the thumb button fitted to the back of the blade. When opened, the blade is very rigid and the liner lock holds it securely. The bright orange handle ensures that you don’t lose the knife if you put it down and there are various ridges and grooves moulded into it for added grip. A sprung clip on the end holds a small karabiner, so that the knife can be clipped to a belt loop or lanyard if required. There’s even a whistle in the end, so this knife is more useful than you might think! Okay, so it probably won’t withstand years of continuous usage but it’s just the job for a kit such as this.

The pouch also contains five-feet of orange paracord, five emergency matches and a striker, an orange handled fire steel and striker and a small fishing kit with hooks, line and weights.

The final item is a multi-function whistle (that’s very loud!) that comes apart to reveal several more items. The three-part design twists open and there’s a small signalling mirror in the end of the whistle section. The black centre part is a magnifying glass that could possibly be used to light a fire and the end contains a small signalling torch, a compass and a thermometer.

I’m sure many hardened Bushcrafters would think that this item is a bit gimmicky but it really could be very useful and could be ideal for someone who spends time in the great outdoors. The pouch only weighs 200g or seven-ounces, so it could be carried in a jacket pocket or rucksack without really being noticed until it’s needed. At only £29.99 it won’t break the bank either.
