John Fenna finds the Jack Pyke Soft Shell Jacket to be a good choice for an outer layer
Made from a 340gm, 100% polyester, breathable, waterproof laminated Breatha-Tex material, the Jack Pyke Soft Shell Jacket has a smooth outer surface that does not collect burrs too easily and shrugs off thorns and brambles, while a waterproof mid layer, and a fine fleecy liner keep you cosy and warm. The twin vertically zipped lower front pockets, the vertically zipped pocket on the right chest panel and the pocket on the left upper arm all have tricot knit fleecy linings and are of a good size. There are no inside pockets.
All the zips are water-resistant with single end pullers and fabric puller extensions and feature puller “garages” to avoid leak points. The hem of the jacket has an elasticated drawcord with single hand adjustable cord lock adjusters at each side of the jacket.
At the back of the snug collar there is a hood-mounting platform with 5 snap fasteners to take the removable hood. The hood itself is generously cut and shaped and has an adjustable Velcro-front fastening as well as an elasticated drawcord front edge. The drawcord has locking adjusters and captive ends, so no dangly bits to whip your face in a wind.
The jacket sleeves have Velcro adjustment with rubber tabs for ease of use. The jacket is quite close fitting but the stretch of the fabric allows for good freedom of movement.
Out In The Weather
When I have worn the Soft Shell Jacket out in heavy rain, it took over 30 minutes for any damp to penetrate the seams (which are not sealed), but in generally damp, drizzly weather the jacket kept me totally dry and comfortable. The fabric is almost silent in use and it proved “easy to wear” in dry conditions when a fully waterproof jacket would be overkill.
I did find that I had to be a bit careful doing up the front zip as at times the closed zip failed to lie flat and so was not as weatherproof as it might be, but generally, the Jack Pyke Soft Shell Jacket has lived well up to expectations.
Available in either Hunters Green or Jack Pyke’s renowned English Oak camo, the Jack Pyke Soft Shell Jacket is available in sizes S-XXXL and costs around £75.00.
