DD Optics RF1200

DD Optics produce high quality binoculars and there is a model in their range for most applications, but there is more to them than just binoculars. On test here we have their RF1200 Pro Rangefinder, a very compact and tough little unit which is packed with features.

A rangefinder can be an invaluable tool for shooters, and it is well-worth having one to hand. Sighting in a gun at a variety of distances becomes so much easier when you can measure those distances very quickly and easily. If you are stalking or hunting and your quarry is likely to appear from more than one direction you can check out the distance to each potential target location to ensure correct shot placement.

Small but mighty

story continues below...

Weighing just 155g, the RF1200 Pro fits in your pocket and takes up almost no room. Measuring, as the name suggests, up to 1200m the rangefinder provides 6x magnification and very clear on-screen LED readouts. The display incorporates an automatic brightness control which does make the readings easier to read in a variety of conditions, including at night. A fog/rain mode also allows you to continue to take readings in bad weather and there are five other modes to optimise the amount of information the unit can provide. In golf/target mode the unit will recognise the object that is a different colour, either the flag on a golf hole or a coloured target, and put the distance on the display (apparently golf is a game that involves hitting a little ball into a small hole then taking it out and doing it 17 more times?). Ballistic, horizontal distance and vertical height modes are also very useful to the shooter.

There are just two buttons on the body of the unit, one to switch it on, and one to move through the various modes, both are soft touch and using the unit could not be easier.

Conclusion

This is a great little unit, very easy to use, extremely light and full of features. You certainly get a lot for your money and it represents really good value for money. If you are out shooting and spot a target you can very quickly take a look at it with six-times magnification and, with a touch of a button, get a very accurate distance measurement. The auto power off means you can quickly pocket the unit and take the shot, knowing you are not wasting your battery.
