Outdoor Edge Flip-N-Zip Saw Combo

Outdoor Edge Flip-N-Zip Saw Combo

You might recall I showcased Outdoor Edge products a few months ago, as the importers (Top Gun) sent me a selection of gear. This time around it’s the turn of an unusual, yet potentially useful combo called the Flip-N-Zip, which is an all-in-one field dressing kit. The package consists of two items - a twin bladed lock knife and compact folding saw.

The knife (Flip-N-Zip) offers a regular 3 5/8” drop point blade. Made from Cr13MoV stainless steel it’s hollow ground and features ambidextrous studs for one-handed deployment. At the rear behind the hump is jimping to provide more purchase for your thumb. Engagement is by a mid-positioned back lock. The frame is stainless and shows black rubberised handles with inset gripping bars.

Zip It!

On the top next to the locking bar is a secondary gutting blade (zip). At 3 ½” long it curves upwards with an inside edge and rounded/blunt nose and back. The idea is you make an incision through the skin then insert the gutter, which can be run along to open up the belly cavity with no possible chance of cutting the stomach open. It’s equally useful for skinning chores too, when you want to open the pelt around the legs without damaging meat.

Deployment is by a single stud and locking by a liner, when in position there’s a jimped, thumb shelf at the top/back for added support. The handle is wide and hand filling with the jimped sections of whatever blade is folded offering support for the index finger. In drop point mode I did find this a bit distracting to the hold.

The folding saw shows 4 3/8” stainless blade with diagonally opposed teeth. The tip is a round/extended bumper so as not to cut internal organs. The handle is rubberised aluminium and engagement is by a mid-positioned back lock. This is a neat little saw for going through sternum or pelvis.

All Together

Both knife and saw come together in a nylon belt pouch with press stud closure and belt loop. In the field the Flip-N-Zip saw combo proved useful; the main knife blade is good for general chores and gutting work be it deer or rabbits etc, with the gut hook allowing no nonsense opening up of the stomach area and also as an aid to skinning. I am an advocate of the small, folding bone saws and the Outdoor Edge version works as well as most in its class.

If you’re happy with using a folding knife for field carcass preparation then the Flip-N-Zip saw combo is well worth a look.
