High performance torches are now nothing new; that is until you take a close look at the new range from Olight! Made in China, Olight has hit the UK market running with a range that positively eclipses the rest, the number and variations are incredible, as is the affordability when compared to many of the equivalent makers; and besides the prices, the quality is exceptional, from the biggest to the smallest, the build and ability really is impressive, each and every Olight sending out a beam of the purest white light, way in excess of what might be expected.
Taking the smallest and one of the largest for test, both torches have proven themselves over the past few months, as more than up to the tasks they were designed for. Both use the latest LED technology, neither or these torches uses a bulb; instead, the LED provides up to 60,000-hours of light, allied to the ability to withstand the knocks most torches are inevitably subjected to. Equally, the fact one of them is smaller than your average door key is in no way a description of the amount of light it produces.
Called the i3E EOS Keychain flashlight and available in a variety of anti-scratch anodised colours, this little waterproof aircraft grade aluminium torch is powered by a single AAA battery, is a mere 57mm long and 13mm in diameter. Complete with a split steel ring to attach to your keys, by twisting the knurled end, a blinding 90-Lumen beam of light is sent out through a TIR lens. Operable with just one hand, this little torch has come into its own on quite a few occasions when abroad or searching for the latch on an unfamiliar gate and an amazing amount of light from such a small source.
At the opposite end of the scale, is the M3XS-UT Javelot, imposing, if only for its name. As much military and security as it is a hardcore piece of hunting and outdoor kit, the Javelot generates serious amounts of power. Complete with a plastic traveling case, ballistic nylon belt carrier, spare rubber O-rings and battery conversion and extension tubes, the Javelot is the complete package.
Manufactured from the same aircraft grade aluminium as the i3E, waterproof to 2m and anodised with anti-scratch MilSpec Type 3 coatings, the Javelot is just short of 250mm long with the larger 3.6V 18650 rechargeable lithiumion battery converter fitted, or 210mm when fitted with the AA converter, the heavily serrated handle is approximately 28mm in diameter, the LED powered head of the torch 63mm which, like the large rubber ON/ OFF/momentary activation button at the opposite end is strongly scalloped around the edge. Just behind the head and located between the heat ventilation slots, the fourstage power/strobe control is housed allowing the Javelot to emit light at 3, 80, 600 and 1200-Lumens. This in the most powerful mode equates to a 1km long beam of crystal-clear white light, all from an easy to grip and manipulate torch that weighs a mere 255g.
Costing just £13.99, the i3E EOS is available in black, red, blue or green and is great value for money, whilst the Javelot costs a little bit more at £125.95 As I’ve commented, the i3E and the Javelot are at more or less opposite ends of the Olight range, each one serving completely different purposes. And whilst they might differ in price, size and rationale, the quality of construction and attention to detail remains the same, both of them notable pieces of kit.
