› Hearing defenders have come a long way over recent years and contain more and more clever technology. The ISOtunes Sport DEFY ear defenders are designed for shooters, and the Slim version on test is packed with features.

Low-level sounds that might otherwise be hard to hear can be amplified up to eight times so that you can hear important sounds like range instructions clearly while remaining protected from gunshot noises. The ear defenders also have Bluetooth compatibility, which means that you can connect with your mobile phone, so you don’t miss any important calls while shooting.
The controls are very easy to use, with two control wheels that adjust the volume and TSC levels independently. There is also a single multi-function button that allows you to answer calls, play or pause your device, and skip tracks etc. The idea of listening to music while shooting may, in some circumstances, not be the safest thing to do, so careful consideration is needed here.

Protect your hearing
In use, the level of protection is very good, even if you are unfortunate enough to be standing next to someone shooting a .44 Magnum revolver. On an indoor range, noise from other people shooting alongside you can be hard to block out, but the ISOtunes Sport DEFY Slim ear defenders do a great job. Being able to amplify other sounds, like range commands or conversation, is a useful feature and they come through very clearly. Outdoors, they work just as well and the sound from shotguns is taken down to a very comfortable level, plus you can still hear the birds singing.
As with any safety or protective equipment, it is always better to buy the best you can, because once your hearing is damaged, you cannot get it back. This is particularly important with younger shooters, as their hearing is a lot more sensitive than ‘senior’ folk.
