Kleen Kanteen Water Bottle

Any time of year, and in most weathers, I find I need a drink of water while out and about.  With all the issues being raised about the health impact of plastic bottles containing BPAs and if (or not) using aluminium bottles can affect your health, plus the issues of aluminium and plastic bottles leaving an unwanted flavour in your drink, and whether or not you can keep fruit juices etc., in your drinks bottle, I decided to try out a stainless steel water bottle.

Klean Kanteen offer a range of bottles made from 18/8 stainless steel and I chose to look at the 800ml capacity Classic Reflect Model in a mirror polished finish.  As the bottle is made from inert stainless steel with a food grade silicon O-ring seal and with a bamboo topped stainless steel cap, there are no plastics, paints or alloys that can be linked with health issues or impart flavours.

This 800ml Klean Kanteen bottle stands some 10” (25.5cm) tall and 2.75” (7.5cm) wide with a 1.75” (4.5cm) wide neck.  The easy-to-clean slim and elegant shaping of the bottle allows it to fit into most rucksack pockets (or vehicle cup holders) and the whole bottle is made from tough stainless steel with no paint or plastic to chip or wear.  Even the cap is made from one piece of stainless steel (with sustainably sourced bamboo) and logos are laser etched, so it is not surprising that the bottle comes with a lifetime warranty.

Tough, durable and able to take the rough and tumble of outdoor use, the Klean Kanteen Classic Reflect 800ml Mirror Stainless Bottle is easy to fill and drink from and can be used to carry fizzy drinks or even acid fruit drinks without harm, and is easy to wash.  Although the cap should not be fully immersed or dishwasher cleaned (not good for the bamboo – which will benefit from the occasional oiling), the body of the bottle is dishwasher safe.

Freezing the Klean Kanteen can cause serious damage and voids the warranty and, as the bottle is not insulated, it is not recommended for hot liquids.

Having said that, I have boiled water in the Klean Kanteen and also used it as a hot water bottle (wrapped in a spare sock) inside a sleeping bag on a freezing winter camp and the bottle took no damage that I could see.
