Gerber Gator Knife

Gerber Gator Knife

Gator Folders date back to 1991, when the original shown at the USA Blade Show was voted, the ‘Most Innovative Knife of the Year.’ Since then, the range has developed and altered little from the early models and even 14-years later they are as popular today as when they first appeared. Undeniably it was the unique, advanced thermoplastic handle with an alligator-like skin like texture that won people over. There’s little doubt it offers a reassuringly secure feel and a reliable comfortable grip. As Gerber says: “Who could have guessed that the feel of reptile scales would beso satisfying?”

LATEST GATOR

The latest addition designated the Gator Drop Point, Fine Edge measures 4.96” closed and 8.54” open with the 3.76” blade deployed. It weighs a light and pleasing 5.4oz. The 154CM stainless steel blade is much deeper than others in the series which I feel sets it apart and will be a major selling point.

The distinctive Gator Grip handle draws the eye! Made of glass-filled nylon with a rubberized over-mould, Gerber says: “It has an ‘alligator skin like texture for a tacky and comfortable grip.” These knives are possibly the most useful to use in typical UK weather conditions. Which unfortunately for us that means rain! The lock-back mechanism in my opinion is simple yet secure and possibly the best retention system out there, on what I would call a folding sheath knife.

BALANCED

The knife sits perfectly balanced in the hold; the large forefinger choil like other Gator Grips models is ideally positioned for safe use. The strength of the deep, drop point blade is yet another major feature I feel will attract those who know their ‘blades’ and require a folder that can offer what this obviously does.

First and foremost the hunter – even I realise the benefits of what initially seems to be quite a specialised piece of field cutlery. Reason being due to it being so versatile for skinning, gutting and preparing small and even large game! Plus having the capability of retaining a high level of sharpness. In use this certainly stands out as an impressive design with high quality stainless steel build that won’t rust or tarnish as long as you stick to a sensible and recommended cleaning regime.

In fact the more I took this model into the field, the more I kept realising this ‘Gator’ is yet another example of when you think Gerber can’t offer anything else to tempt you, they’ve managed it once again!
