Now that our lovely, hot, sunny summer is all but a fading memory, it’s time to think about the cooler, darker evenings and freezing cold nights! Yes, I know shooters are a hardy bunch but being cold and miserable is never any fun, especially when you’re out after rabbits or foxes when most sane people are in a nice warm house in front of the telly or tucked up in bed. Decent clothing is obviously essential and a softshell jacket is really worth investing in; they can be worn on their own or worn under another jacket as part of a layering system.
I’ve recently been wearing a rather nice jacket from ShooterKing and the Thermic Soft Shell has proven to be worth its weight in gold, especially when I forgot to take my usual hunting jacket to my local farm. My thick jacket had been taken out of my Land Rover for some reason, leaving only a thin, but waterproof, ex-German army jacket. The Thermic really worked well as a base layer.
The ShooterKing Thermic jacket is made from a stretchy softshell material (96% Polyester 4% Elastic) and looks rather like wetsuit material; it has a high level of breathability and ventilation and it’s really soft to the touch, which is just as well, as it is a softshell jacket after all! It feels really comfortable and the full-length YKK zip allows you to adjust the level of warmth as required. There is a handy pocket on the left chest, ideal for a mobile phone and two YKK zipped hand warmer pockets are on the front.
The Thermic I’ve been wearing is in a colour called ‘brick’ and it’s something you’ll either love or hate –I like it, my wife hates it! It’s also available in green and I can see it being more popular. This softshell is a very versatile jacket and is available in a wide range of sizes, from Small to 5XL. It’s not cheap at £89.95 but ShooterKing make great product, so should last for years.
