They say most of your heat loss is from the top of your head… this is only partly true but good advice if you’re going to be out in the colder weather. Even if you only wear a naval style ‘watch’ cap or ski hat or knitted bobble hat, it’s a great way of keeping heat in and feels very unobtrusive when worn. Here I’m looking at four head warming offerings from the Jack Pyke range

First up is the basic JP Fleece Bob Hat in English Oak camo. This is a real head warmer; non-pilling, as are all fleece hats in this round-up. it uses a recognised camo pattern for this time of year and is the one I use more often over the years.

Next comes the JP Fleece Balaclava in English Oak, which is a bit of a favorite of mine. Its peak is useful as its forgiving should you need to move toward the scope’s eye-piece a little further than usual. It also acts as a good eye-shade and face concealment as well. The aptly named JP Double Knit Balaclava has a heavier build and an integrated peak. The ‘Stealth fabric tricot lined’ face cover at the front is elasticated at the top of the lower opening eye-slit, so it can be pulled right up over to rest on the bridge of your nose to keep out the elements. This time, it’s the Balaclava’s double knit synthetic wool that reaches down to fully cover the neck. So if warmth really is your primary concern, this is the one for you. I’ve left the most ‘left of field’ headwear in this round-up until last – that being the warmest in this group – the JP Tundra Hat. As well as fleece inserts such as the fold down ear flaps it largely uses ripstop cotton with acrylic (artificial) fur trim along the top and sides. The quick release chin strap consists of an ABS buckle and strong webbing chin strap. I never thought I’d be seen wearing a hat such as this but hey – I am getting older and mellower, unfortunately just not much wiser! Available in English Oak camo in sizes S, M, L & XL, it costs £19.95
