The British weather is as unpredictable as it is changeable, so it’s always handy when out hunting, hiking or walking to have extra items of clothing in your bag. What you take with you obviously depends on the time of year, but more often than not the extras should include a fleece, gilet or a full set of waterproofs. However, there are times in the spring and summer when a lightweight outer jacket can come in handy if you’re initially wearing a fleece outer. Especially if the jacket affords extra protection from the wind and showers, while also adding a level of insulation. This is exactly what the new Viper Tactical Frontier Jacket has been designed to do.

The wild frontier

Manufactured from 100% Nylon, the jacket features a noticeable but very discreet amount of insulated padding between the outer face fabric and the Viperlite lining. This combination of lining and padding lends its lightweight, breathable and thermal qualities to further the effectiveness of the garment in mid to low temperatures. Features include a chin guard, a very high neck and an integral hood with rear elasticated drawcord toggle adjust. It only uses one adjuster, but this simple arrangement is positioned so that it’s easy to fully draw the hood around and up to the face.

Storage is catered for by 2x side zipped pockets, 1x upper zipped chest pocket (all with pull assists) and a very roomy zip fastened internal chest pocket that’s very useful for storing valuables. Other useful features include vented mesh underarm panels for better air circulation, plus elasticated cuffs and hem seam. In keeping with many other Viper garments, the Frontier also has a ‘Hook and Loop’ ID patch on the left arm.

Conclusions

A big part of the Viper Frontier Jacket’s appeal is that it can be folded down very compactly and stored in the supplied stuff sack. Interestingly, it is also available in their own highly effective VCAM camo pattern. This will be of interest to those who prefer to use or require a camo outer. If not, it’s also offered in Black or Coyote.

Its claims to be breathable, windproof and highly water repellent prove to be well-founded, and due to the jacket’s styling, it can also be used as a leisure garment when required. It offers a surprising level of extra warmth on those breezy days. Another bonus is that, unlike similar lightweight outerwear, the Frontier has a generous amount of pockets, with their layout being practical and discreet. This further adds to its versatility, making it a smart choice for all the shooting disciplines and outdoor pursuits enthusiasts.
