Blaenafon Iron Works Museum

story continues below...

Time really does pass very fast, a fact I was reminded of when I visited the Wartime Weekend at the Blaenafon Iron Works Museum in Wales, over the weekend of 4th-5th August. Whilst on-site, I met up with my old friends of the Volkssturm-V3 group, who portray the German equivalent of the British Home Guard. Re-acquainting ourselves and catching up on news, it was hard to believe that it was four years since we had last met. I’m very pleased to say that they are still going strong and looking for new members. They have also added a few more items to their collection of weaponry, to show the eclectic mix of rifles and machine guns with which the Volskssturm were armed. They have Madsen and Lewis machine guns and now a replica of a most unusual weapon called the ‘Volkssturmgewehr V5’. It was a basic copy of the more usual MP44 and, like that weapon, it fired the 7.92mm calibre ‘Kurz’ round. They took part in a small, but lively battle scenario at the site and afterwards posed for a group photograph. If anyone is interested in joining this friendly group, which attend events across the country, they can be contacted through their website at: www.volkssturmv3.co.uk.
