Fruits of Victory

Fruits of Victory

story continues below...

The depiction of Women’s Land Army has become very popular with re-enactors and they put on some very fine displays at various events. Largely these are WWII displays, but the WLA has its origins in WWI. This work is different, in that not only does it cover the WWI period, it tells the history of the American version of the WLA.

It makes for very interesting reading from many different points. There is the innocence of the girls entering the organisation, some believed that potatoes grew on trees for instance, and the stories of hard work. The influence of the British WLA is covered and the story carries on from there with anecdotal evidence supported by diaries and letters. Some of the girls remained working in agriculture after the war and some were very successful in their new-found work. All in all, a nice work telling a history, which is not widely known about in the UK.
