This work is sufficiently packed with lists full of useful facts and figures to satisfy any statistician. Yet, at the same time, the text holds the attention of the reader. It’s a format that works well to present a fresh approach to a campaign that is well-known to historians and general readers alike. The author reminds the reader of certain events and uses that to lay out the ground before moving to the crux of the matter, the organisation, tactics and deployment of the armoured units which fought in Normandy, each of which is considered in turn. The design of tanks, the logistics keeping them operational and even small-unit actions are all given coverage. All the Allied operations from Avalanche to Tractable are covered and the German’s response. No work like this would be complete without mentioning Michael Wittmann, but space is found here for the other tank commanders, such as Eric Barkmann.
