Photographing the Fallen

Today, the First World War front line that was the Western Front is defined by the cemeteries in care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, whose work began even whilst the war was still being fought. This work largely tells the story of one man’s involvement, Ivan Bawtree, with the establishment of these cemeteries. He photographed the cemeteries as they were created and the men who worked tirelessly to establish them and make order out of the chaos of the battlefield. The legacy left behind is told in this fascinating and very moving tribute. The photographs of then and now and the stories behind the cemeteries will make the reader consider these locations in a much different way and perhaps even visit some of them as many people still do.
