Recknagel 70 MOA adjustable scope mount

Recknagel 70 MOA adjustable scope mount

The scope mount is often the ‘also ran’ item on the shopping list when you buy a new rifle/scope option, even the sound moderator these days gets more attention. That’s a serious cause for disaster, as the mount is the only thing connecting your aim to the bullet. So something solid, suitable and built for purpose is the key consideration for anyone who takes their marksmanship seriously and wants to do the best they possibly can.

Alan Rhone Ltd (01978 660001) also understands the need for precision mounting systems and he imports and stocks the superb Recknagel range of mounting systems, amongst others. They are a German-based firm that manufactures an amazing array of scope mounts, custom gun parts, triggers, rails and more. Recknagel cater for all types of shooter’s needs and styles of rifles from sporting, target and military/tactical. Even Editor Pete Moore swears by them, as he recently got a windage-adjustable unit from them to sort out the mounting problems on his CZ527.

Their scope mounts and rails are second to none but it was their Tactical ERA-TAC one-piece mount that really caught my eye.

Long Ranger

Being a bit of a long range and wildcat geek, the need for a scope mount to allow extreme range scope adjustemnet has become more and more necessary. However, this usually means using an MOA-biased rail to allow more scope adjustment. Not now, enter the ERA-TAC 70 MOA mount.

This solves all your scope mounting problems of running out of adjustment. This is a one piece mount built to the highest quality; made from high-grade aluminium, the whole unit is hard-anodised to Mil Spec Class 3 for extreme use and longevity. They are precision machined, so guaranteeing longevity and a rock solid design, just what you need in a scope mount, peace of mind!

You have a choice of 30mm, 34mm and 36mm body tube ring sizes, so it can accommodate all the new long-range scope types from Kahles and Zeiss as well as the universal 30mm scope ring diameter. Differing heights of 20mm to 30mm will also cope with all objective bell sizes and contours too.

Tight Nuts

You have the choice of 7/16” tightening nuts (Tri Nuts), which I had, or the quick release system with twin precision clamping levers. The former is slightly cheaper than the latter. This model on test is the T2063-0025 with 30mm rings and Picatinny rail mount with four Torx head screws to secure each ring top. Recknagel have also cleverly added two clamping rails to each scope ring top; each allows additional mounts for cosine indicators, level bubbles, rails for lasers, PDA etc, no stone is left unturned.

story continues below...

Height from base to rings is 25mm; on this model the total length of the mount is 120mm (4.724”) from ring to ring with an effective clamping area of just under four inches. The nuts for clamping give a positive and even tension and two, integral cross bolt recoil lugs to the rifle’s rail, so one blends with the other to form a single secure unit.

Elevate

Now the best bit, this mount as the name suggests, elevates from 0 to 70 MOA for range compensation. It’s simplicity itself, with minimal but precisely made parts to ensure repeatability and exact adjustments. Basically, you have one large pivoting mount in two major sections. The front fixing screw joins the top and bottom halves and allows a forward pivot and thus downward motion, which translate to increased MOA. The rear fixing screw is very clever, as when this and the front screw are loosened in unison the pre machined square edge cam can be rotated at 10 MOA increments for exact adjustment with zero run out.

At each 10 MOA rotation, the mount tips forward; you then tighten the Torx head screws to 12Nm max with the key supplied. Self-locking thread inserts maintain a permanent and precise seating of the connections between top and bottom halves. The hinge is a solid tapered join, so it is impossible for any play in the mount thus ensuring your zero and adjustment is maintained.

Stretch Your Legs

Fitted to a Lynx 6.5x47mm target rifle, this 70 MOA mount really stretches its legs. A 130-grain Berger VLD travels at 3262 fps for 2406 ft/lbs from a 24” barrel. Sighted in at 100 yards you are 194.7” low at 1000 yards which relates to +77.9 clicks with a ¼” per click scope adjustment, which is 18.59 MOA. Plenty of room left for adjustment with this scope mount. Out at 1500 yards, where we shoot haggis for fun in Scotland, you are -670.3” low which relates to 42.67 MOA, now that 70 MOA can keep you on target and allow a decent optically centred sight too.

I also love this mount on a 300 Blackout Schultz & Larsen Legacy and my .338 BR subsonic Tikka. The .338 BR aka Whisper shoots a Sierra 300-grain Match King at 1060 fps for 748 ft/lbs with 7.5-grains of HP38 powder from a 14.5” barrel. Zeroed at 100 yards you are -213.2” low at 500 yards which is +170.6 clicks from a ¼” click scope or 40.72 MOA. This is where the 70 MOA Recknagel really shines, as I can plink away at silhouettes at this range and still have enough adjustment to try shots out to 750 yards, great fun.

Conclusions

Want just one mount that does it all? Well this is it. It will fit to any Picatinny rail system, for universal use its size and weight will not impede even a lighter rifle, allowing for a heavier scope or silencer. Even as a scope realignment mount, i.e. to achieve an optically centered scope, this Recknagel is superb but as a longer range, well extreme range scope adjustment system, I can think of none better, 70 MOA is more than you will ever need but is most welcome. It’s made my 338 and .50 cal subsonic testing so much easier.
