Gunbag round-up

Gunbag round-up

There is a huge variety of gunbags available for protecting and carrying your rifle; also they’re a legal requirement for the transportation of any gun in and through a public place. To save on repetition, all bags featured here have a ‘rucksack’ type carrying harness as well as the usual carrying options of carry handles and adjustable shoulder strap – however, where necessary, I’ll detail individual standout features of the carrying options a specific bag might have.

Buffalo River Dominator FT PCP

Primarily designed for ‘buddy bottle’ PCP air rifles with a large objective lens scope plus bipod, it will also accept most air rifles with a Nightvision scope on-board, even those fitted with often ‘higher-set’ analogue units.

Available in two-lengths of 42- and 50-inches, both measure 15-inches at the deepest point and are approximately 6-inches wide when closed. Manufactured from Durable Ballistic Nylon the very generous internal foam lining and inner waterproof PVC skin can be removed for cleaning and fully opens out for use as a shooting mat. External stowage consists of a full zip open pocket that extends right down one side of the bag and the pouch extends towards the front. It also has two centrally positioned 8½x11½-inches zip closure pocket on both sides.

Prices: 42-, 50- Black and 50-inch in ‘Buffalo Camo’ are SRP £48.49, £56.99 and £61.99 respectively.

Garlands Assault Air Rifle Slip

Manufactured from tough Nylon treated with two waterproof coatings, this particular ‘Tac Bag’ can be purchased in Realtree APG camo or Black and in two sizes – one denoted ‘Extended’ measuring 53-inches or ‘Short’ at 45-inches. The 53 is deep enough to swallow the largest scoped and moderated rifle with bipod and features a double zip opening. The inside walls are heavily padded with close cell foam and it fully zips open for use as a shooting mat. The interior has two Velcro fastening rifle retaining straps. For external stowage there are two accessory pockets with Velcro fasten overflaps that are ideal for holding removable buddy bottles or an average size bipod or such like. Next to this is a rectangular zip top box pocket and alongside the nose section is another long
zip close pocket.

Prices: Realtree APG (Extended) and (Short) SRP £51.95 and £47.95 respectively in Black: SRP £39.95

Jack Pyke Rifle Bag

Measuring 49-inches in length and 13-inches at its widest point, the bag is manufactured from 1000D Cordura, making it very tough and hard-wearing. The very strong double zip main fastener only opens the rear quarter section of the bag so you slip your rifle/scope combo in. Internally the bag has a waterproof antiscratch PVC liner which encases the internal ¼-inch foam padding.

It has external stowage galore configured as a large 14x9-inch pocket, two smaller pockets at 4x9-inches for items such as buddy bottles, or bipods and another large 24-inch long zip fasten ‘flat’ pocket running the full length of the forward section tapering to the front. The first three pockets close by large, strong Velcro overflaps.

The first large pocket also has two internal securing straps for individual items stored plus the carrying harness has an adjustable waist strap.

Price: SRP £59.95 (available in English Oak and English Woodland Camo patterns)

Viper Tactical Weapons Carrier

Manufactured from 600D polyester, this ‘Tac Bag’ measures 46x13x3-inches and has a generous amount of close cell foam padding with a lined interior. Internally there is a very generous stock sleeve, muzzle protector, plus two wide adjustable Velcro fasten straps.

The main external zip fasten pocket measures 29x12x1¼- inches deep and has two modular plates on the inside for attaching’ smaller pouches to keep individual items separate. The outer holds three detachable pouches that have ABS snap buckle fasten adjusters with Velcro down overflaps. Affixed onto a full-length ‘MOLLE’ modular system plate, they can easily be replaced with any other Alice style pouch/holders in the Viper range.

Price: SRP £85 (available in Black only)

Aim 60 Tactical Drag Bag

Made from 1000 denier Cordura with extra thick closed cell foam padding, this is just one of a range of Drag Bags that are available in various lengths (Aim 40, 50, 55, etc.) and colours. The number given on the bag denotes the length and all measure 11.5-inches (at the deepest point) and 3-inches thick.

There are two pockets set along one-side of the bag – pocket sizes differ dependent on the model, but all use the same layout. One large main pocket is set next to a smaller size pocket. This also has an outer pocket accessed by a ‘slashed’ diagonal zipper. Both pockets unzip around three sides to hinge open for ease of access and inside both have elasticated loops and pockets for securing items stored.

The bag fastens with an overflap protected heavy-duty zip with cord toggle attachment and fully opens out for use as a shooting mat. Six ABS clip fasten adjustable compression straps add extra security and another secures an external detachable muzzle protector/drag hood including drag handle. The very well-padded adjustable shoulder harness has an adjustable sternum and waist straps including its own storage pocket. Three adjustable ABS clip-fasten canvas straps secure the rifle in place while in transit.

All versions are available in Lincoln Green or Black, but the latest model 55 is in Multi-Cam only.

Prices: AIM 40, 50, 60, Multi-Cam 50 and Multi-Cam 55 are SRP £136, £153, £172, £174 and £186 respectively.

Razorback Stalker Rifle Carrier

Manufactured from a waterproof and abrasionresistant ‘Lamtec’ canvas outer consisting of four function layers of an extra waterproof membrane, high density 10mm foam, EVA tough shell and a soft Syn-fleece lining, the Razorback features an internal butt end ‘protector retainer’ pouch and retainer strap. The EVA lateral spine is the source of the gunbag’s main strength while the outer panels of Armour Flex positioned at the front rear and middle areas give extra padding and scuff protection.

The ‘slot in’ Grip Lock ABS carry handle is a very clever secure design and the very heavy duty non-slip adjustable shoulder straps boast a sliding rubber shoulder pad with waist strap. The rubberised grip tag zip fasteners are all protected by Weather Shield Guard making them ‘self-healing’, therefore protected from the elements.

For stowage it has one 13.5x6-inch outer pocket, comes with a sachet of Napier VP90 corrosion inhibitor and a 5-year Warranty.

Price: SRP £156.98 (available in Green, Grey or Terracotta)

Conclusion

There are many other gunbags on the market, but I personally feel that these featured tick all the right boxes for build quality, rifle protection and superior carrying options. The AIM 60 Drag Bag is one of the best of its kind, while the Razorback Stalker is no slouch due to its highly innovative new features.

The ‘Dominator’ bags are very appealing due to the extra depth, but any of the others featured will serve you well. Ultimately it’s up to level of protection or features you require that will dictate which you choose.
