When Napier of London releases a new product you can be sure it has been minutely tried, tested and proven - plus it’s usually aimed at a specific slot in the market place. Such a case was their new Razorback gun bags; not the cheapest but with exceptional build quality and practical features. However these are just the tip of the iceberg as a range of accompanying accessories of the same style were planned and now they are here.
Unless otherwise stated, they all share the same build-style and materials. These are the outer shell is heavy duty ‘LAMTEC’ canvas, bonded to four function layers, a waterproof membrane, high density 10mm foam, EVA TOUGH SHELL and soft Syn-fleece lining. ARMOUR FLEX scuff panels and comfortable, non-slip, rot-proof shoulder straps and GRIP LOCK grab handles are used where applicable. Also, the Unique Weather Seal Guard protects zips and seals. All zips have strong pull tags for ease of operation and everything is waterproof.
First up is the Range Bag. Based on Napier’s original design, nylon-lined it measures 12 X 9 X 10”. Externally there are two 7 X 7 X 2” self-seal, zippered pockets for ready use storage. Access is by a Velcro-closed full over flap with an oblong flat zip lid pocket measuring 11 X 6”. Inside you have the option of a horizontal divider that will allow you to layer items in terms of accessing as to how often they might be needed and used. This Velcro’s in and when not required lays flat in the base. It also means your kit is not just jumbled in so making what you need hard to find. The general build allows the bag to stand upright so retaining its shape due to the reinforced ArmourFlex base aided by four button feet underneath.
It’s now twice as strong and trimmed with ArmourFlex anti- scuff panels, which are positioned at the front of the flap and along the lower base. Carriage is by double loops that secure with Napier’s, innovative GripLock handle. Plus a detachable shoulder strap with a rubber-textured, non-slip section that is secure and comfortable.
For the rifleman it’s roomy enough for ammo, score cards and the usual accessories and is trimmed to match the gun slips. I’ve used the original version for a good while and by comparison the new Razorback quite frankly blows that away, affording much more by way of strength, practicality and comfort.
The Razorback Cartridge Bag measures 10 X 7 ½ X 4” at the full Armourflex protected base that extends all the way up the sides. The top flap fastens with a leather strap and conventional brass buckle. There’s also an integral 1 ½” adjustable, non-slip shoulder strap. Again, fleece lining is omitted in favour of a stronger and practical Nylon inner. Super strong and designed to hold up to 120 x 12-gauge shotgun shells it’s the perfect companion to the Razorback Shotgun Slip.
Last but not least the Razorback Bolt Carrier. Some people feel it’s best to keep the bolt in the rifle at all times to avoid loss. However, the opposite view is that by removing it; in the event of the gun being stolen it’s no good to anyone. It’s your call but Napier now gives you the option. It’s a simple, 1 ¼” wide sleeve-type design with an adjustable, Velcro-closed over flap that in effect adjusts to bolt body length of 7 to 9”. A loop at the rear caters for attachment to a belt if required. A full ‘EVA’ moulded shell protects it from knocks and dirt while a Nylon liner is again the practical choice. Granted not a very exciting accessory but still very useful and one of the best of its kind.
All Razorback products are available in Green, Grey or Terracotta, guaranteed for 5-years, superb quality, packed with features and very affordable.
