Quake Stag All-terrain Shooting Seat

Quake Stag All-terrain Shooting Seat

Now that middle age has arrived, along with a dose of quad biker’s knee, the search for a comfortable shooting seat has become ever more important. I have tried all sorts of homemade bodge-ups, some of which worked well but invariably weighed a ton, or others that fell to bits at the first outing. The majority of my pigeon and rook shooting is from a hide if possible and I normally use a straw bale as a seat. However, the down side is that as I have relatively long legs my backside, when sitting, is lower than my knees and at the end of a busy day when I may have stood up and sat down several hundred times I get considerable aching in my knees!

The solution is to find a seat that allows me to be comfortable and shoot unhindered! If the seat is also easily collapsible and does not weigh too much that would be even better. Quake’s Stag seat seems to be the answer to my prayer! To start with, the legs can be taken out of their fixings and stored within the seat base and the back rest folds down and it all fits into the heavy duty carry bag provided. The seat is round, with attached cushioning for added comfort and best of all it rotates silently through 360°, the cushion is attached to the seat with hook and loop fasteners and it is straight forward to remove if desired and is easily cleaned. The legs are telescopic; meaning ones’ bottom level can range from 44cm to 60cm off the ground; this large range of adjustment should suit all but those on the extreme ends of the height spectrum. Also, they can accommodate uneven ground easily, with good-sized feet to stop it sinking in too.

The Stag is made from robust moulded plastic and strongly made. At around 6lbs, it’s easily carried, as there are webbing eyes to attach a strap to. Having used it several times now, I have yet to find any problems with it. The only niggles (which are really only minor) are the cushion could have more padding for those with less well fleshed posteriors and the push button catches are quite stiff, although I imagine they will ease over time.

A testament to the strength of the Stag seat has to be that my children have spent several hours playing on it and have yet to cause any damage and as they are well known for their destructive prowess, that has to be a good advert for build quality. The price may appear a little steep but the lack of knee ache make this shooting seat a bargain in my eyes and I am looking forward to many years of shooting in comfort from it. Price: £67 (average)
