Book Reviews

As a result of the various lockdowns, we have spent far too much time indoors and not enough time shooting. Having cleaned every gun, reloaded every case and reorganised the gun safes, what else is there to do? A good read might just be the ticket and there are plenty of shooting and reloading publications to choose from.

Gun Digest 2020

The Gun Digest combines a large range of interesting articles, covering subjects from ‘21st Century Blackpowder Handguns’ to ‘Punt Guns’ and ‘Sixguns and Leverguns’ with a catalogue of firearms, shotguns, and airguns in current production. The catalogue gives technical specifications for each gun and a list of all of the versions available. The articles make for a very interesting read and the catalogue section is really useful.

Sierra Rifle and Handgun Reloading Data

This publication is also dedicated to the company’s own bullets and includes data for a large number of different powders. The information is all presented in a folder, with removable pages. This means you can just take the page you want to the reloading bench saving space and keeping the rest of the folder clean and safe. The rifle section includes specific loads for handgun calibres, like .357 and .44 magnum, for use in long-guns which is useful for underlever shooters. There is a chapter about the Sierra bullet range and also one on reloading which covers the equipment and the process involved. The ballistic services chapter includes a very interesting ‘FAQ’ section.

Modern Reloading by Richard Lee

Revised in 2017, Lee Precision’s reloading book is one of the best on the market. Though it concentrates on their own reloading equipment, the book includes reloading data from every bullet and powder manufacturer you can think of, with over 37000 loads listed. It is unusual to find such a large amount of reloading data in one publication and for that reason, this is a very popular book. Over 150 pages on reloading include chapters covering each stage of the process, information on pressure and a bullet casting section. This is a very informative ‘instruction manual’ and contains everything you need to know to start reloading.

Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading

The data in this book covers Hornady bullets exclusively, as you might expect from a bullet manufacturer. Projectiles of the same weight are grouped together and data for a number of powders listed for each weight category. Under each bullet-weight, charges for up to five different velocities are given for each powder, making working up a load much easier. There is also a simple step-by-step explanation of the reloading process, tips for safe and accurate reloading, plus a page dedicated to each bullet type in the Hornady range. This is a very interesting and informative read and well worth a look.
