Lee Precision Deluxe Power Quick trim

Lee Precision Deluxe Power Quick trim

Trimming cases is important because consistent case lengths are vital to ammunition performing consistently. However, it can be a slow process, so anything that speeds it up is a good thing. An increase in speed must not, of course, come at the cost of quality, so with that in mind, I tested the Lee Deluxe Power Quick Trim.

Lee Precision

The Power Deluxe Quick Trim uses the same calibrespecific dies and cutter head assembly as the hand-powered Deluxe Quick Trim but utilises an adaptor for use with a power tool.

With the correct die inserted into a single-stage press, and a case lifted into the die, the cutter head is inserted from above and slight pressure applied before starting the cordless driver. Cases are cut to length almost instantly and the tool cuts, chamfers and deburrs the brass at the same time, so it is ready to reload and requires no further work. You can adjust the trim length from the maximum permitted length for your calibre down in ten .001” increments, should you require slightly shorter cases. The instructions on how to adjust the trim length are relatively straightforward but it is well worth working through the process a few times before you start trimming.

Technique

story continues below...

If you are trimming a lot of cases, then holding a power tool above your press on a waist-height bench can be a bit hard on your arms, so mounting your press on a lower surface is a good idea if you can.

You also need to watch the speed of your power tool as the instructions state that you must not exceed 1200rpm and a drill is not suitable, it needs to be a cordless screwdriver.

A chip catcher is also included in the kit, which fits around the ram on the press and catches all the tiny bits of brass that would otherwise just fall all over your press and bench. It’s clever little details like this that make Lee Precision gear so user friendly.

Conclusion

This is a great gadget, and one of the best high-speed trimmers for processing a large number of cases. The brass is neatly finished with no burrs or sharp edges and the cases accept bullets for seating without any issues. Being able to fine-tune the case lengths in .001” stages is a very useful feature (if you want to tweak your case lengths slightly), but this needs to be approached with caution to avoid producing unsafe ammunition. You do of course need to buy a die for each calibre that you reload, but they are well priced and readily available.
