Hull Super Fast 24g Cartridge Review: High Speed, Low Recoil

There is a lot to be said for going light, whether that means a smaller, trimmer shotgun or a smaller bore, mainly because it’s less effort to carry. Going lighter on the load can also have its benefits, especially when using Hull’s Super Fast 12-bore load from their competition line.

This cartridge has always been a winner with clay shooters wanting a faster load and a dense pattern for those tricky doubles or long crossers, but with velocities up to 1500fps, recoil with the 27g version will be stiffer than most, especially on a high-volume bird day.

That’s why the 24g Super Fasts are, in my opinion, a better bet, as the reduced loading keeps the velocities high and does not compromise pellet density too much, but more significantly, the recoil is reduced, making them much nicer to shoot.

I like using these for rough shooting in the woods after squirrels. That’s just me, but it shows what a clay cartridge can do away from the grounds.

What Goes into a Hull Super Fast Cartridge?

What the Hull Super Fast does is offer a value-for-money cartridge, priced at £285 per 1,000, in one shot size, two loads, and with either a plastic or fibre wad, depending on your end usage. It’s designed really as a club-level cartridge that can elevate or prepare you for competition-level shooting in the future.

With this 24g loading in particular, what you lose in shot weight, you gain in speed and downrange performance, with smooth but moderate recoil, and, as a bonus, they work in semi-autos too, which I had forgotten.

The 24g loading equates to 312 pellets per cartridge, and for the heavier 27-gram loading, you have 356 pellets to play with, not a lot of difference really, and that is reflected on the pattern boards. Control of spherical tolerances allows the shot to fly truer, producing dense, regular patterns with maximum performance, yet minimum pressure.

The 24g fibre wad load uses a 67mm (2.63”) case, while the other options use a 70mm (2.75”) one. All variants contain No.7.5 lead shot (2.3mm), which is well suited to clay shooting, but also highly effective for vermin control and simulated game. Hull makes great efforts to maintain precise diametric tolerances during manufacture, ensuring the shot size remains within regulation limits for competition use.

The outer casing is blue, with all the salient details of the load inside printed in silver, with a standard but very uniform six-star crimp and no bulges at all. All cases are subjected to rigorous quality control checks, including primer sensitivity and plastic, with this load having a nickel finish to the 7mm head.

Hull cases are loaded with the CX range of primers, which are widely regarded as among the most reliable and consistent on the market today.

The propellants are single-based and engineered to deliver a precise burn rate, pressure, and velocity, resulting in the Super Fast cartridge achieving impressively high speeds of around 1500fps. Even at 40 yards, each pellet still retains a velocity of 630fps and 1.03 ft/lbs of energy.

The fibre wad performs very well, as it transfers energy from the propellant to the shot column without deformation, while also sealing the barrel effectively against hot gases. That’s because Hull knows the trend for overbored barrels these days and has made fibre wad diameters to fit these barrels correctly without compromising performance. Also, the material used for the fibre wad is specially selected for its uniform density and thickness before being subjected to a waterproof, anti-tear treatment.

What I like about Hull is that they take quality control very seriously. Throughout production, they measure ignition time, peak pressure, barrel time, muzzle velocity (V1), range velocity (observed) (V2), and the full pressure curve, covering all parameters, followed by the all-important pattern. They are as bad as I am!

How Does it Perform? Field and Pattern Testing

Through my 12-bore Browning Shadow, with ¼ and ½ chokes fitted, the Super Fast 24g load still had some poke. Yes, velocities were up there, but compared to a 27g load, these were very moderate on recoil transfer to the shoulder and cheekpiece. The fact that the bores were left nice and clean was a bonus.

At 30 yards, using the ¼ choke first, we recorded a total of 224 pellets on the board. Of these, 74 were evenly spread within the inner 15”, with the remaining 150 distributed around the outer area. A good start, and reassuring to see 224 pellets from the original 312 making contact with the pattern board.

Let’s see how the tighter ½ choke fares. This time, the pellet count increased to 280 strikes, with a dense 106 hits in the inner zone and 174 in the outer area, so a very effective pattern for fast-moving clays or running squirrels.

Conclusion

Truthfully, what’s not to like about this cartridge? Hull says it shoots fast, and it does. It patterns well, and that’s certainly true, while recoil remains moderate enough for all-day shooting. All of this comes at a very reasonable price. That’s the Super Fast from Hull.
