When you are out in the fields and woods on a cold winter’s day (or on a brisk Spring morning, a chilly Autumn afternoon, or a cool Summer evening) it is often good to take along a drop of something warming, be it a flask of coffee or a flask of something a little stronger – just to keep the blood running.
In Summer, an iced drink can seem like a life-saver.
Stanley, a company with an enviable 100-year reputation in making steel vacuum bottles and flasks of all sorts, may have just the thing for your needs in their extensive range. I have recently been trying out their One-Handed Vacuum Mug from their Nineteen13 collection, and their Classic Pocket Flask.
Stanley One Handed Vacuum Mug
Holding 16oz (473ml, or about 1 pint) of fluid, hot or cold, the Stanley One Handed Vacuum Mug is a great blend of style, practicality and performance. Available in a range of finishes from brushed silver to ‘stealth’, the vacuum mug has a stainless steel vacuum insulated body and a BPA-free thermal plastic lid with a removable grit guard.
The slim design means that the mug, that measures approx 9.5” (24cm) tall x 3” (8cm) in diameter, can fit easily into a rucksack pocket, game bag, car cupholder or bike cage, and is easy and comfortable to grip in one hand. The lid has a one-handed operation, spring-loaded, drinking spout, where the operating button falls easily to hand so you can “press and drink” with ease. The clip-on “grit guard” keeps the drinking surface clean when the mug is packed away and also protects the operating button from accidental use, but is simply rotated out of the way when you want a drink.
The mug will keep hot drinks drinkable hot for something between 6-8 hours – a full mug, untouched – or less for a partially filled mug - while cold drinks stay icy for a whole day.
Cleaning the mug is easy as the top is simple to strip down for washing and is dishwasher safe, and the stainless steel body does not retain flavours or odours.
The lid design is easy to drink from or – if you want to share – pour from.
Ruggedly constructed. leak-free, easy to use, easy to clean, practical, yet stylish, of good capacity and giving good insulation the Stanley Nineteen13 One-Handed Vacuum Mug has proved itself very useful during testing and looks to becoming a constant companion.
At around £26.99 the One-Handed Vacuum Mug should prove popular with many outdoorsmen for cold or hot weather use.
The Stanley Classic Pocket Flask
At first the Stanley Classic Pocket Flask looks a little strange compared to most flasks that are designed for carrying a little nip of something to keep the cold at bay. Measuring approx 6.25” (16.5cm) tall x 3” (7.5cm) wide, the flask is a rounded wedge shape in section, but this fits surprisingly easily, not only into a pocket, but also into your hand!
The wide mouth opening makes filling (not to mention emptying!) and cleaning the flask easy, and the stainless steel construction makes the flask tough and durable and ensures that the flask does not retain flavours and odours. The BPA-free lid gives a good seal and is retained by a plastic swing arm, so is impossible to drop, and the plain base is big enough to engrave a few words if required.
The Stanley Classic Flask costs around £21.99 and comes in either Stanley’s “signature” Hammertone Green or in Black, and has a classic style retro look, practical function, tough and function pocket flask – and it comes with a lifetime warranty!
