Helko Werk Axes

Just Axes are a new company set up to supply, as the name suggests, ‘just axes’. In order to ensure their success, they have secured some of the very best brands in the field and they carry a good range of axes suitable for the UK market. Coupling this with an extensive knowledge of their products Just Axes are able to provide customers with great service and top-quality products at competitive prices.

Great brand

German company Helko Werk have been manufacturing axes since 1844 and they currently produce some of the finest axes available, incorporating modern manufacturing techniques and the very best materials. Both of the axes tested carry a drop forged, C45 high carbon steel head which has been hardened to 53-56HRC and hand ground. Polished to a mirror finish the heads are supplied ready sharpened and protected in a leather sheath.

The handles are Grade A American hickory with an oiled finish and are secured with both a softwood wedge and a round steel ring wedge. As long as you keep the handles oiled they will give years of service and the head will remain securely in place.

The Scout

The Classic Scout is a compact axe, with a full-sized handle carrying a relatively small head, making it ideal for backpacking or camping. If you need to drop some smaller trees or build a hide miles from anywhere, and do not fancy humping a full-sized axe for miles, then the scout is for you. Although the head weighs just 1kg it certainly exceeds expectations in terms of the work it can do, a credit to the design and construction of this particular axe. It can be used for heavier felling work but obviously it takes more time and effort than if you were using a larger tool.

The Pathfinder

This small hatchet features a 38cm handle and weighs only 0.85kg making it very portable and easy to pack. The head in nice and sharp and it makes easy work of any camping duties. The butt end of the head is suitable for light hammering so is very useful for setting up a tent or hide. The Pathfinder feels great in the hand and it is ideal for both detailed work and preparing firewood or kindling.

Conclusion

Both of the axes tested are extremely well-made and the quality of the materials and workmanship is top notch. The feel and balance is perfect, and the cutting edges are really easy to maintain. Just Axes were really helpful with great advice and guidance so if you are in the market for a new chopper they are well worth a call!
