Buck Sprint Select Folding Knife

Buck Sprint Select Folding Knife

It’s been quite a while since we last saw a new and innovative concept in the mechanics of deploying a knife blade from its handle. Usually, for one-handed opening, the manufacturers include thumb studs or an elongated thumb hole. However, American knife supremos Buck has used their vast knifemaking knowledge to bring us such a thing, which is featured on their latest model, the 840 Sprint Select. While there is only one in the range, there is a choice of handle colour: black, blue, green, or grey.

Go fast

The Sprint Select weighs 3.2oz and measures 4.375” closed. It holds a relatively broad, deep 420HC 3.125” stainless steel drop point blade. A unique selling point of the Sprint is it features what is termed ‘ball bearing technology’. This allows the blade to open incredibly smoothly and rapidly when you engage the flipper of the knife. The ‘flipper’ - as it’s known- can clearly be seen protruding from the top forward section of the knife when it’s in the closed position. The optimum way to deploy the blade is to hold the handle across the back with your thumb on one-side, with the middle, index, and little finger on the opposite. Then you can use the forefinger of the same hand to push down and back on the flipper. This results in the blade effortlessly gliding from the handle a full 180° to lock securely out in the deployed position. Due to the design, the flipper - which is part of the knife blade itself - now serves as a finger guard, and combined with the choil, plus ergonomic handle design, makes the Sprint a very secure knife in the hold, even in wet weather.

As an added bonus, the handle’s slim lines have a textured finish, plus the lower section of this one-piece moulding has a subtle yet highly practical contoured finger recess. Due to the nature of the open design handle frame, a toughened red ABS buffer has been installed where it sits recessed into the handle at the most rearward area.

This is to prevent overtravel when closing the knife and it also serves to protect the point of the blade from touching the frame itself.

Stay Sharp

As with certain other knives that the company produce, the Sprint also uses Bucks’‘Advanced Edge2x blade technology’. This is a process that results in the cutting-edge geometry remaining uniform for its entire length. This in turn results in the blade having improved cutting power and a greater capability to retain its sharpness for a longer period of time.

The lock liner

mechanism is strong and positive, giving the user a very solid and safely deployed blade when in use. The handle also features a removable pocket clip. It’s manufactured in the USA and carries the Buck Forever Warranty.
