Helle Alden, Temagami & Eggen Knives

Helle Alden, Temagami & Eggen Knives

Craftwork

Pete Wadeson takes a look at a trio of fixed blade sheath knives from Helle; the Alden, Temagami and Eggen – all designed for the dedicated hunter…

The Helle brand name need little introduction, as the high quality handmade knives this Scandinavian company produce are very much sought after by many outdoorsman.

I’ve been privileged to check over most of the company range, now I get chance to test a couple of time tested favourites and a new addition. These are the Alden, and the Eggen the new addition Temagami. All are full tang, fixed blade sheath knifes. All the blades come with stylish and very robust leather sheaths with belt loop and apart from the Eggen (more on this later), are manufactured from Triple Laminate Stainless Steel – a special metal Helle are famous for using. Also the wooden handles on all are crafted from Curly Birch that the company use almost exclusively for their very high quality knives.

The Alden

Measuring 8.5” in overall length with a blade length of 4” the very stylish Alden knife fits very naturally into your hold. It has a stainless steel guard to prevent your fingers slipping forward in use andthe handle is generously sized and ergonomically designed to aid grip.

The Temagami

Next is the newcomer to the Helle range, the curiously named Temagami. Designed by survival expert Les Stroud in conjunction with the craftsmen at Helle - it’s possibly one of their most individual blades. Best known by many from the television series ‘Survivorman’ the input of Mr Stroud’s preferences in a fixed blade knife are quite evident.

A traditional styled ‘survival’ knife with an overall length of 8.9” and a blade length of 4 ½” this is one of Helle’s most substantial and rugged looking blades, marking quite a departure from their usual design format.

Specifically the handle construction, as it shows two side plates that are very solidly attached to the tang with two large brass flush ended and indented rivets. These can be clearly seen in the accompanying photo as can its generous lanyard hole with brass eyelet liner. The company has left the wood handle in a natural finish, being quite light in colour with a nice grain configuration. The handle design is as practical as it is appealing, incorporating a forward finger stop and is ergonomically styled to sit very comfortably and securely in the hold. Incidentally, the knife was so named due to his Canadian roots as Temagami is a municipality in North Eastern Ontario.

The Eggen

Last but not least, with an overall length of 8.25” and a blade length of 4” the Helle Eggen with its rich brown stained curly birch handle initially doesn’t seem that dissimilar in style to the Alden. However there are two key areas where it differs, it omits a steel finger guard for a generous finger stop crafted into the knife handle itself. It’s also one of the few Helle knives to be manufactured from Sandvik 12C27 Stainless Steel. Don’t let this deter you from considering this model as this material is of a very high grade. Like all featured the Eggen sits wonderfully well in the hand and is superbly balanced. All come in presentation ‘tubed’ cases complete with a cleaning cloth.

The Helle Alden, Temagami and Eggen are priced at £92.95, £139.95 and £82.95 respectively. For nearest stockists contact Whitby & Co on 01539 721032 or visit www.whitbyandco.co.uk
