Gerber Gator Drop Point Fine Edge

Gerber Gator Drop Point Fine Edge

The test knife joins the ever growing roster of Gator designated knives to make a total of seven models in the range.  Gator Folders date back to 1991, when the original model shown at the USA Blade Show was voted, the ‘Most Innovative Knife of the Year.’ Since then, the range has developed and altered little from the early models, and even fourteen years later they are still popular. Undeniably it was the unique advanced thermoplastic handle design with an alligator skin like texture that won people over. There’s little doubt it offers a very reassuring, reliable and comfortable grip. As Gerber say; ‘Who could have guessed that the feel of reptile scales would be so satisfying?’

Gerber Grip

This latest model is designated the Gerber Gator 154CM, Drop Point, Fine Edge. It measures 4.96” in the closed position, has a blade length of 3.76”, when fully deployed it has an overall length of 8.54” and it weighs a reasonable 5.4oz. The 154CM stainless steel blade is much deeper than others in the Gator series which I feel sets it apart from other models and will be a major selling point.

The acclaimed Gator Grip handle, draws people to any knife it graces. Made of glass-filled nylon and covered in the ‘Gator Grip’ trademark rubberized overmould that the company term as having an ‘alligator skin like texture for a tacky, comfortable grip’, these knives are well suited to use in typical UK weather conditions. Unfortunately for us that means rain!

Folding Sheath Knife

The lock-back mechanism is favoured by many hunters and it is a valid reason to choose this type of folder over another. I personally feel it to be a more secure mechanism than a liner lock on what many might term ‘a folding sheath knife.’

The knife sits perfectly balanced in your hold; the large forefinger choil – as on other Gator Grips models - is ideally positioned for safe use. The strength of the deep and unique shape drop point is yet another major feature I feel will attract those who know their ‘blades’ and require a strong folder.

As an airgun hunter I realise the benefits of what initially seems to be quite a specialised piece of field cutlery. It’s great for skinning, gutting and preparing small game for the pot, as well as most other tasks a hunter may require, and it retains its sharp cutting edge well. The quality of the 154CM steel is impressive and won’t rust or tarnish as long as you stick to a sensible and recommended knife cleaning regime.
