Buck 263 HiLine Knife

› Compact, folding, pocket-sized cleaver knives are gaining popularity for their versatile design. Primarily intended for precision cutting, such as slicing tendons and bones, and preparing meat and vegetables, they can also be used for other purposes, such as making kindling. My experience with these types of knives is that some have blades that are a tad on the slim side, but in this case, you’ll soon realise that this is quite a unique option.

Strong, smooth, and stylish
The Buck 263 measures 4.375” in the closed position, weighs 3.9oz, and holds a 3.25” D2 steel cleaver-style blade. This can be opened with one hand by pressing down on the blade flipper at the rear of the spine. The operation is very smooth, as Buck has integrated into the pivot what they term ‘ball bearing technology,’ a system that employs ball bearings held in an internal recess between the pivot point and the blade.
When deployed, the blade is held out very securely by a strong frame lock mechanism, plus ridging along the blade’s spine allows the user to have more purchase to press down with the thumb for increased cutting pressure.
A noteworthy feature is the titanium-coated fasteners, which have an antique bronze finish that is also applied along the upper-facing side of the handle. This finish aids weatherproofing and gives the 263 quite a stylish look.

USP
It’s worth noting that, unlike the usual stainless steel, the blade here is made of D2 steel. This is ideal for the intended purposes of this knife. So, just what is it? Well, it’s a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel.
One of the most significant advantages of D2 steel is its durability and abrasion resistance. It’s also a tough material that can withstand significant impact and wear, plus it’s resistant to chipping, cracking, and breaking.
In fact, D2 steel knives are unique in their high hardness, wear resistance, and edge retention capabilities. However, they are not rust-proof, but given their high chromium content (similar to stainless steel), the material has moderate corrosion resistance. Therefore, for such a knife as this, Buck has made a wise choice, and as for corrosion, it’s always wise to clean, dry, and oil your knives regularly.

Very nice handle
The ergonomic, durable, grey anodised aluminium frame also has raised G10 side plates, which add their usual benefits of a safe, secure grip.
Security is further enhanced by a forefinger choil, and the G10 handle insert plates have a slightly raised scale finish along both sides. The knife also features a lanyard hole and a stonewashed stainless steel pocket clip.

Conclusion
Whether you are cutting, slicing, or chopping, the Buck 263 will stand up to a lot of wear and tear, and though the blade is quite substantial and thick at the spine, it’s surprisingly light in the hold and compact to carry. Incidentally, there’s a selection of XL HiLines, obviously based on this model but larger and equipped with a sheepsfoot blade.
