Helle Alden, Temagami and Eggen knives

Helle Alden, Temagami and Eggen knives

The Helle brand needs little introduction as these high quality, handmade Scandinavian knives are very much sought after. On test are a couple of favourites and a new addition!

These are the Alden and Eggen and the new Temagami. These fixed blade designs offer a full tang build and come in stylish and robust leather sheaths with belt loop. Apart from the Eggen (more on this later), the others are manufactured from Triple Laminate Stainless Steel – a special metal Helle are famous for using. Also the wooden handles on all are crafted from the seemingly obligatory Curly Birch.

ALDEN

First up is the Alden. Measuring 8.5” in overall with a 4” blade this stylish design fits very naturally into your hold. It has a stainless steel guard to prevent your fingers slipping forward in use but the handle is generously sized and ergonomically designed to also help aid grip.

Next is the newcomer to the Helle range, the curiously named Temagami. Designed by survival expert Les Stroud in conjunction with the craftsmen at Helle - it’s possibly one of their most individual blades with a distinctive character. Best known by many from the television series ‘Survivorman’ the input of Stroud’s preferences in a fixed blade knife are quite evident. A traditionally styled ‘survival’ knife with a length of 8.9” and a 4 ½”blade it’s one of Helle’s most substantial and rugged models.

It’s also quite a departure from their ‘usual’ design format. Specifically the handle construction as it shows two side plates that are attached to the tang with brass rivets. These can be clearly seen in the photo as can its generous lanyard hole with brass eyelet liner.

NATURAL

The company has left the wood handle in a natural finish, being quite light in colour with a nice grain configuration. The design is as practical as it is appealing incorporating a forward finger stop and is ergonomically styled to sit comfortably and securely in the hold. Incidentally, the knife was so named due to his Canadian roots as Temagami is a municipality in North Eastern Ontario.

Last but not least, with a length of 8.25” and a 4” blade is the Eggen. With its rich brown stained curly birch handle initially doesn’t seem that dissimilar in style to the Alden. However, there are two key areas where it differs; it omits a steel finger guard for a generous finger stop integral to the handle. It’s also one of the few Helle knives to be manufactured from Sandvik 12C27 Stainless Steel. Don’t let this deter you from considering this model as this material is of a very high grade. The Eggen sits wonderfully well in the hand and is superbly balanced. All come in presentation ‘tubed’ cases with a generously sized cleaning cloth.
