Smith’s Knives

From humble beginnings as a small Arkansas stone company to their current position as the market leader in the knife and scissor sharpening category, Smith’s has become the fastest growing, full line supplier of quality sharpening products.

So, while better known for their comprehensive range of sharpening instruments, Smith’s now also have a small selection of lock knifes on their roster. This has recently been boosted by a trio of blades that all share the same or almost identical design of overmoulded handle. As well as this, they all feature a strong lock liner mechanism, have ambidextrous dual thumb studs for one-handed opening, have a removable reversible stainless-steel pocket clip and a lanyard hole. Interestingly the PackPal and Trailbreaker both measure 8-inches when open and hold a 3.5-inches 420 Stainless Steel Clip point blade, with the blade of the Trailbreaker having a black oxide finish. In contrast the Edgesport measures 7.87-inches when open and holds a slightly smaller 3.3-inch 420 Stainless Steel clip point blade.

Described as a ‘custom handle with overmould’, this is what sets these models apart from the others the company offer. The handle is a Hi-Viz yellow synthetic with contrasting hard grey rubber inserts set along the front and back of the grip – here there is also two sets of useful ridging. There’s an integral thumb guard to prevent slippage in use while the ergonomic textured design and inherently grippy nature of the over mould combine to give a very secure feel in the hold.

If you’re looking for a general-purpose field knife for all-weather use with one-hand opening facility, then this trio of blades are well worth checking out.
