Spyderco Temperance2

Spyderco Temperance2

When the name Spyderco first came to the attention of UK shooters it only stood for radical looking folders. Time moves on and the company have for some time now offered a limited amount of fixed blades; one of which caught my eye was the Temperance. Essentially a martial design it showed a big triangular shaped blade with a black, synthetic handle and a multi-directional QD sheath. It certainly appealed, though I used it purely for deer work and my example is a bit old now, though no less able!

Double Distal

Pleasantly surprising is that Spyderco have re-launched and re-vamped this model into the Temperance2. The build is near identical though the materials have changed a bit, which makes it look a little special. The long, tapered blade is made from VG-10 steel and features a double-distal taper with a flat grind.

Double-distal means the blade shape tapers both vertically from spine to edge as well as in length, so lessening resistance to the cut and promoting efficient operation. At 4 7/8” with a long tip there’s no problem getting into nooks and crannies with the Temperance2, nor opening up on big cuts. The build is a full tang style with a skeletonised rear to improve balance. Up front behind the hump is jimping for the thumb if you prefer.

Micarta?

story continues below...

The handle is now canvas micarta in two separate scales that are riveted on. This material is a cloth/glue laminate and in this case brown (mocha). The shape remains with a flared hilt and pommel (to lock the hand) which then expands out into a deep and curved belly. The feel is smooth yet with good traction to the hand and it’s secure wet or dry, nor does it absorb blood, as I have done a few deer with it. Though more an edge-down design, it’s possible to go edge-up using the guard as a secure thumb stop. At the rear is a lanyard hole. At 9 ¾” overall and weighing 6 3/4oz the Temperance2 is a good looking, efficient and handy medium design.

Spyderco have simplified the sheath a little. Made from a black synthetic called Boltaron the mouth is shaped to engulf the hilt to give a solid friction lock. This offers practical, one-handed draw and insertion. Belt attachment is by a G-Clip that gives a QD facility and it can be easily re-positioned for an alternative carry by two screws. The hollow rivets around it’s outer edge can also act as lashing points should you wish to secure it to your gear.

I liked the original model as it really works and the Temperance2 is more of the same but a bit more sophisticated, so should have a greater appeal.

For: Efficient and pleasing design

Against: Might be a bit too radical looking for some

Verdict: Looks good, feels good and cuts like a demon
