Victorinox Alox Ltd edition Knives

Victorinox Alox Ltd edition Knives

Every year since 2015, Victorinox have been producing limited edition, coloured scale Alox knives in three of their knife patterns. They don’t become readily available over here until the middle of the year, so now’s the time to snap up a 2018 model while you can; you still have to be quick, as it depends on how popular the colour they have picked is, which for 2019 is Champagne.

The Alox metal scales are a real step up from the normal plastic ones on the knives you can buy in your local outdoor shop. The Classic pocket knife is the base model, it can fit on a key chain with its nail file, tiny 39mm knife blade and scissors. The middle model is the slightly larger Cadet, a personal favourite of mine for its size and capabilities. The colour for 2018 is Berry Red, which appeals to hordes of Swiss Army knife collectors. The Cadet model has 8 functional tools, which fold out from the knife. It uses a back spring to keep the tools in place; this is strong, but it is not a locking knife. This does make it UK legal carry. The tools are a 62mm knife blade, can opener, flat blade screwdriver 3mm, bottle opener, wire stripper, flat blade screwdriver 6mm, nail file, nail cleaner and a key ring. For an everyday carry tool that’s really all you need.

Swiss engineering

As with all Victorinox knives, the Alox Cadet is very well made. The tools and blades are two handed opening with nail nicks on all four of the fold out elements. The smaller size of the Cadet means that it fits in a jeans’ watch pocket better too. For an office carry, I go for the Cadet, it has ‘Officer Swisse’ stamped at the base of the knife blade. The Pioneer model is the biggest, it’s still UK legal carry but is a pocket full. For me, the most user-friendly is the Classic. On the scales, one side has the Victorinox shield picked out in silver and the other has a flat panel, where they engrave the year of the model, in this case 2018. The 58mm long Classic is £35.95, the bigger Cadet is £42.95 and the Pioneer £46.95. The limited edition Alox models truly are stunning to look at, a perfect EDC? Yes, I think they are!
