The term ‘Camp’ folding knife is well-known, they also go by the term ‘Scout‘knives, as they are the staple of scouts all over the world. They are very popular and follow a trend with the same general tools available in a small, compact package. The Boker Magnum Classic Steel Folder looks like a camp knife, but they don’t, for some strange reason, call it that – ‘Classic Steel Folder’ is a long title for a camp knife. I have many, many Bokers but this one had escaped me until I came across it by accident looking on Uttings’fabulous website. The price was a shock to be perfectly honest at £11.99, surely that cannot be correct? Well, in for a penny, I ordered two just in case it was correct. Turns out it was right and when they arrived I was most impressed indeed.
It comes in a black steel tin embossed with ‘Magnum by Boker’; inside is the knife held securely in a foam insert. It has Rose wood scales on both sides and these look almost pure black; they contrast well with the bright silver colour of the bolsters and blades, also the three steel pins though each scale. The main blade is 65mm long and non-locking, so it complies with the UK carry laws of non-locking and under 75mm long. The use of 440A steel, as opposed to the usual 440C, is interesting. 440A has a lower carbon content than 440C and makes it more durable, while still holding an edge and being corrosion resistant. The main blade comes out of the opposite end to the lanyard or key chain ring. This very useful feature is always found on any good camp knife. It is a large 12mm swiveling loop, so it allows you to fasten on all sorts of things, not just lanyards but hooks or spring loaded clasps.
Being a camp knife, it has a can opener tool, also a bottle opener or ‘cap lifter’ as the Americans call them. Lastly, it has a 35mm long straight awl, this is very sharp and can be used for all sorts of tasks. All the tools are non-locking, so care is needed when using them.
For the price, the knife is incredible value and it’s a UK legal design; as a knife to have in your car or rucksack, it’s brilliant. The fit and finish is exceptional for the money- do as I did and buy two. Thanks, Boker, and thank you, Uttings, for making it available in the UK.
