Balancing Act

The Balance is a very apt name for this new butterfly opener multi-tool, as when fully closed it’s unlike many of the more angular designs we’re used to. To use the manufacturer’s claim ‘It’s like a smooth stone in your pocket with its all rounded edges and efficient design.’ Very poetic, but in the closed position it feels unlike any multi you’ve held before, but they did use this type of approach with the ‘left of field’ Gerber Fit multi- tool we reviewed a while back.

Weighing a reasonable 7oz and measuring 3.8” in the closed position, 5.3” when fully deployed, it’s small and light enough to carry in your pocket, yet includes tools for daily use and tools to handle larger jobs.

This is one of the more fully featured multi-tools, holding 12 components, including scissors, bottle opener, a 2.4” partially serrated fine-edged blade, as well as sliding pliers and screw drivers. Both the regular and small sized flat and Phillips (cross head) screw drivers are interchangeable. Needle nose pliers, partially serrated blade, regular pliers, tweezers, wire cutters, scissors and bottle opener make up the rest; now that’s a whole lot of useful kit.
Maybe the Balance is not a tool to everybody’s taste but on certain sessions it’s all you need and is quite possibly the most ergonomic and one of the more innovative designs that Gerber has ever produced.

The Dime is a feature packed mini-key chain multi-tool. It features a unique blade specifically designed to safely cut or neatly score plastic packaging and a nifty bottle opener that is exposed even when the tool is closed. Weighing a mere 2.2oz and measuring 2.75” closed or 4” fully deployed, this compact and super lightweight multi-tool comes impressively equipped with stainless steel pliers, wire cutters, a fine edge ‘modified’ Tanto style 1.35” blade, spring-loaded scissors, flathead screwdriver, crosshead driver, tweezers, file – all the components most needed but scaled down accordingly.

The Dime may be small but it’s a tough cookie that’ll appeal to the many outdoorsmen who prefer to have a keychain size multi-tool handy.
