Gerber Legend 800 multi-tool

Gerber Legend 800 multi-tool

Measuring 4 ¼” in the closed position and 6 ½” open, this solid multi-tool has been a main stay of Gerber for many a moon. Hunters who use these appreciate the practicality of the tool, and as other styles come and go the ‘Legend’ lives on, mainly due to public demand.

The name is fitting as it features several ‘firsts’ of design and unique features to. For instance, the Tungsten cobalt carbide wire cutter – tougher than steel is capable of cutting through 278lb shark wire. These ‘cutters’ are seen as familiar triangular shape inserts and once ‘worn’ down with use (which will take a lot) can be rotated/replaced so it can be kept working at its highest level.

Versatile

All tools and blades are ‘outboard components’ so you don’t have to open the pliers to access them. When deployed, each tool locks out solidly for safe and secure use, whilst the bolt and axle bearing system ensures easy opening of any tools. These include small, medium and large screw driver heads, a cross head screw driver, bottle opener, 2 ¾” part serrated/clip point fine edge knife blade, saw blade, a double-sided file and a pair of spring loaded Fiskar scissors.

The ergonomic handles are manufactured from anodised aerospace aluminium and have the company’s renowned Gator-Tex® inserts. These offer a very comfortable and secure grip even in very wet conditions. The tool has ‘spring loaded’ plier handles, which in my opinion can be very useful for many tasks where you are undertaking smaller fiddly jobs.

There’s also a saw-coupling unit that allows different styles of universal jigsaw to be fitted. As it comes as standard you get a RemGrit blade with an edge designed so it can cut through almost anything. The most used tools are fitted with thumb assist so you can access them with one-hand. Other tools use easy accessible lugs for deployment.

Lock Up

As for security when deployed and locked in position - to retract any tool back into the handle you need to pull back on the Saf.T.Plus locking mechanism that is accessed by the serrated edge slide catches ideally positioned for ease of operation on either side of both handles.

The attention to detail, quality of build, robustness and practicality of design ably demonstrate why Gerber are one of the ‘major players’ in the manufacture of ‘tools’ of this ilk. Even with so many other multi-tools to choose from and of a similar high quality the Gerber Legend 800 still rates amongst the best.
